It's about the fifth time I read you asking why he can't show respect by shaking his hand. He does, and he bows as well - that's just appropriate for the given situation.

Chinese President shakes a hand, American President bows. Both leaders act equal towards each others cultural habits (bowing, Eastern versus hand shaking, Western)...
Please stop whining. Unless you feel Western culture is the dominant one so any form of respect is out of place.

All the Obama aplogists are just showing their ignorance of Asian culture plus more than that, their ignorance and wilful indifference to the the dignity of the Presidency.

As somebody who has worked for lengthy periods of time in China, Japan and Korea I can tell you that Obama's latest obesiance would have been met with hilarity and perplexity behind the scenes in China. He is going against all protocol for a US President and yes it matters.


We got the usual sidetracking by the attacks on George Bush from a few posters here following the mandatory policy of when there is no excuse for Obama attack his predecessor. George Bush and the Bush family have quite a long association with certain Saudi Royalty - outside of the Presidency. The hand holding and embrace were reserved for those they personally had associations with.

Obama has no personal association with the Emperor of Japan, the President of China etc. Although his genuflecting to a Muslim Prince did say a lot about the Muslim religion he was born into and is thus a member of. Islam does not recognise 'choice' in this matter. If Obama renounces his religion for real he is an apostate subject to Islamic law.

The genuflection was incredibly embarrassing to the point where I honestly wonder what he and his advisers are really thinking. In a way I think he doesn't care about the general American public and what they think which is why he will be a one term President. It is this arrogance that will see him out of office if he runs again, not any alleged racism from most people who don't like him.

But don't worry - his public appearances at Christian churches in Chicago are just that. He was introduced to the Reverend J Wright's church by an early Black female mentor who quite openly admits she told him to go there because he would make contacts.

BTW - she is disillusioned by him, being a woman of principle who lives by her convictions. The interview with her and others was in that New Yorker article that had the cartoon of Obama and his wife on the front.

It was bad enough when Obama bowed low to the Japanese Emperor. My sources in Japan plus the Japanese print and tv media (I am fluent in the Japanese writing system so I can read primary sources) all said the same thing - the Japanese people and Palace officials thought it was an incredibly embarrassing action for the US President to engage in such a bow that is now not even performed except by certain Japanese peple.

The protocol that is acceptable for a Head of State is an inclination of the head - not a waist type bow. In Japanese society waist type bows are only for the Japanese and then only under certain circumstances. Such a deep bow made by a foreigner is not interpreted as 'respect' - it is seen as inappropriate, trying too hard and in the case of a US President, frankly humiliating.

I will be reading the primary Chinese sources on his latest public obesiance and I am sure that likewise there will be chuckles and head scratching. If you cannot accept these points you have no real knowledge of Asian culture in Asia as opposed to what Americans see in the US from Asian people. There is no 'respect' for a leader who does not carry himself as a leader.

And all the public displays of obesiance and self humiliating will cut no ice with the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. In their world view the leader must behave publicly like a powerful person and with the dignity of their office.

obama also disrespected King Abdullah. In Islam, one bows only to Allah, never to man. obama not only disrespected King Abdullah, but he conveyed blasphemy to all of Islam.

All this bowing to foreign leaders, and "get tough" with ordinary Americans must be an intense source of PRIDE to employees of the Apollo Alliance, Acorn, and to all who voted for obama, both dead and alive.

Oh DrWizard - China, Japan etc are NOT 'southeast Asian' cultures.

They are east Asian cultures and they are preoccupied among other thing with the correct way for people of power to show their dignity. Obama lost face with them by those antics.

As for the other poster showing Bill Clinton bowing at a ceremony - that is not with the leader of another country. It looks like some American graduation ceremony. And even if he did that to another head of a country he too would have looked like an embarrassment.

There are fringe theories that Obama is brainwashed and while I am the kind of person who is skeptical about brainwashing and mind control because of the glut of not so credible books on various aspects of those topics, Obama's oddball behavior and his heavy reliance on autocues even when talking to children does tend to feed such speculation.

Why is he kissing the butt of the of big Arab oil by bowing? Why is he kissing the butt of Chinese busininess by bowing?

Why is Obama bowing when no one is bowing back? If it is a sign of respect...Why is there no reciprocity?

It's time for the USA to supres that ego and start to be humble, they owe this to the world with all that they have done. For once ladies and gentlemen lets just be happy with how things are going. look at the possitive side, because this site is full of negativity. Try to be positive, its very powerful.

Ok so your the president of the US , your meeting the chinese president for the first time , through your knowledge of chinese law and customs , it is a sign of respect to bow when you meet someone in china !

You dont bow but firmly shake his hand ,

which shows you dont care for their customs or their way of life , therefore you are a crap ambassador for your country that couldnt care less about other nations or what they represent !

You would find it harder and harder to make deals with these nations , that own all of your debt , because you dont respect them !

so yeh man just keep on shaking those hands , cus soon you will be grovelling at their feet !

show respect and you get it back !
