Bright light next to the sun in SOHO image is VENUS

Just now entering the SOHO field of view. Anyone know what this is?
Is it Venus? A star? Anyone know?

Venus transit is June 8th.

This should look pretty cool via SOHO photos

I'm pretty sure it is Venus but just wanted some one to confirm it. It's hard to tell where in proximity to the sun the "light" is.

i think the word WOW came into it!!!!!!

I dont know much about the whole Venus thing on the 8th but the area i am in normally has clear skies at nite and i should get pretty good vision...we have some astro guys on base so ill ask them and post pics when we get them ok'

Just to Clarify,
Venus will Not transit the Sun, as far SoHo is concerned.
Soho, is not in the same line-of-sight as Earth.
But, the pictures will still be cool to look at, with Venus at least IN the image.

I think we have One Satellite in the Right postition for Viewing, "TRACE"

Whats up with photos dated 6/3/2004 23:42 & 6/4/2004 4:18?? Compared to the photos before and after, these two photos look altered and do not contain the object to the left of the sun.

NeedTruth -- Great find. Makes you wonder whats going on with NASA. Looks like the quality department has some issues.

Here is a similar picture of what is definatly looking like venus.
This is from 2000, but check out the line up.

LASCO C3 image showing Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Venus simultaneously. The white circle in the middle of the image indicates the size of the Sun, blocked out by an occulting disk to show the surrounding corona. The horizontal lines are not planetary rings, but 'pixel bleeding' resulting from over-exposure. The dark feature pointing towards the lower left corner is the shadow of the pylon holding the occulter. The LASCO C3 instrument on SOHO uses a mask to blot out direct sunlight, and it has a wide enough field of view (15 degrees) to take in four planets (Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn)in the same picture. Also conspicuous in the picture is a famous star cluster, the Pleiades.

What is that big dark stream coming off the sun? The one going diagonally down to the left from the center.

The DArk thing is part of the spacecraft imager.
Soho, has to create an "artificial Eclipse" to block out the
body of the Sun, to see the Corona.
It's the "arm" that holds the disk, that in turn blocks the Sun..

The Venus transit as observed from Norway will be webcasted on www.astronomy.no (English) and www.astronomi.no (in Norwegian). High quality images taken from several locations will be used. H-alpha filters will be used on at least two telescopes. An airplane will be used to transport equipment (including a high quality H-alpha filter) and crew to a location with superb weather conditions. In addition there are plans to have one telescope airborne above any clouds. This should guarantee good quality images. Since the capacity of the trans-atlantic connection is far too small for such a big event a mirror of this webcast will be hosted on the SOHO webpages

Venus has now dissappeared behind the "Artificial Eclipse" It can also be seen in the LASCO 2 photo

Nobody mentioned it here, so I thought I would. The NEXT time that Venus will transit across the Sun is June 6, 2012 I know that is a little off from the Mayan 2012, still thought it was a big coincidence.
