One of our reporters for the Michigan Messenger, Todd Heywood, spent last Saturday with the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia as they held training exercises. He found them quite different than he expected -- paranoid, yes, but not crazy. And far less predictable politically than he expected.
In a first article for the Michigan Messenger, he wrote about Matt Savino, one of the militia leaders who is, believe it or not, Muslim. He was the one who not only turned down a request from help from the Hutaree, but as Todd discovered, he even tried to help the FBI track down the Hutaree fugitive.
In a second article, he wrote about several other militia members, all of whom clearly share some serious paranoia but none of whom were frothing at the mouth or spoiling for a fight.
Some militia "experts" have claimed that the Hutaree were well within the mainstream of the militia movement rather than on the fringes of the movement, but that is not true. Amy Cooter, a PhD grad student doing a thesis on the Michigan militias, told me that when she first began approaching the militias for her research project nearly two years ago, all of the other militias told her not to spend time with the Hutaree. They all told her that they were crazy extremists and not safe to be around. Their distancing of themselves from the Hutaree is not a pose of convenience after the group got in trouble.

If you want to surprise militia members, why not jump out from the bushes and shout boogy-woogy-woo?
