Mitt Romney Wins GOP Presidential Straw Poll

Straw polls...take them for what they are worth. This one, held down in the Deep South, was narrowly won by a northerner. The most likely southern candidate came in one vote behind, in second place.

NEW ORLEANS -- Mitt Romney won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership conference here Saturday in a victory that will be taken as a sign of the former Massachusetts governor's strength as a 2012 presidential candidate.

Romney triumphed by a single vote over Ron Paul, who took second place 439 votes to 438. Both men won 24 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

There will be a million more of these before November rolls around, so don't despair if your person didn't win.

If it wasnt for Huckabee theres a very good chance Romney could have beaten Obama and would be POTUS now.

Agreed. Huckabee and McCain teamed up to defeat Romney. I remember some shenanigans they pulled in W. Va., in particular.

With a group like "Evangelicals for Mitt" backing him, he will never get my vote.
Those 'believers' are an embarrassment.
