As usual, Silo, thanks for being on the ball and getting us some images

Now here's my kind of Doctor

"This just came in via Dr. Boris Behncke (on Twitter) - after some signs such as increasing seismicity that activity was about to start on Etna, sure enough, the volcano has begun to erupt again (see below). The volcano has been sputtering earlier in the week with abundant steam/ash plumes and some strombolian explosions (top left) in the southeast pit crater. You can check out the Etna webcams to glimpse the action. Look for updates on the activity at the Etna Observatory. "

This picture is so sad but it's all I've got at the moment.

She is showing a majesty I've not seen in over a decade. I have no way of gauging how high the lava is shooting up in the air - I'm not a judge of it but it's magnificent! The lava flow looks like it's taking up half the side of the volcano - it's just stunning. Stunning!

Get to those live web cams people - it's really the 'big one' this time... Maybe not the BIG ONE but it's more of an event than I've seen in, like I said, over a decade.

WOW!

AWesome photo! Thanks for sharing.

how big is this?

big as in a great natural event to be watched?

or big as in above plus active threat to human populations?

Big as in a natural event to be watched...unless She changed Her mind...

For now it's an awesome amount of lava but not as much ash/steam as I would have expected but the 'scene' changes so radically when the 'lights go on' lol. Just a little more than an hour ago it was HOT HOT HOT - now? In the light of day - wellll, She's a mighty thing, but just not quite as impressive as at night... Though I have to say seeing huge sprays and explosions in the day is quite the trip too!

Now in May, and it startetd a few days ago, may 4th to be exact.

Sure did - but then she settled down quite a bit and there was never the pyrotechnic show like She put on this morning. There was also not even close to the amount of lava output.

What she's been doing since what - February at least - is her average every day 'Look at my I'm a volcano' activity. This morning? Well this was an event all together not Her usual display at all.

And yes, you're right - Etna is known to be one of the most, if not the most active volcano in the world. Does that take away from Her splendor?

Not one bit.

peace

living so close, i would make a mold of something special to me and set it out to become filled with lava (and eventually harden. You should try that!

I'd love to try that - and honestly I might get a chance to try. I'll have to have check what kind of 'mold' to use - hehehe...

Thanks for the post...

Holy crap! Where is the lava flowing too? I know this is a very active volcano, but it isn't often that you see lava like that, right? Are there existing lava fields that are handling it so that structures aren't being threatened?

So when do you start to worry?

Hi WestCoast - thanks for the posts - I really enjoy your input.

Ok, that's the thing. Etna is active, way active, but the lava we're talking about? Yeah, that's a big deal.

And no, it usually isn't this much. I haven't seen lava like this since May of what - 12 years ago? (Funny how May seems to be a nice time for Her).

As to when I start to worry? I don't. My hands shake when she does this and I'm trying to take pics, but from adrenaline, never fear. For whatever reason I don't fear Her at all. THANK YOU for your 'keep safe' thoughts though!

peace
