Was wondering the same thing because, as big and important as this eruption is, unless it involves a government coverup of aliens, HAARP, chemtrails or the like, its not really an ATS related topic.

Has ATS become just another chat website where people discuss any old news topic at all?

I’m off to see if I can get closer. I’d hoped I’d gotten the lightening flash in that last one, but no!

Ya know I’ve never been nervous of Her ever, but all this noise? And the lightening flashes? Yeah, it’s got my hands shaking a bit!

All I can say is I've never heard Her make so much noise.

Is it also, honestly, the first time She's made me shake? You bet. The noise is just AWESOME!

Silo, Just out of curiosity do you know what the implications geographically are if she blows?
I remember your mentioning something about the valleys or tunnel networks close to her being set off..or something along those lines..

If she does blow (hoping not) do you know how far her effects would reach?

Would really appreciate your insight..

Ok folks I'm still looking for a ride to get closer - have one coming in about 15 minutes.
Between now and then it's beginning to get a bit overcast with clouds in Her area, but, I have to say, repeatedly, I've never in 12 years had Her RATTLE THE WINDOWS on my 'hut' with Her 'booms'.

The smoke and ash is increasing and getting blacker. Lots of it. I just hope i can come through with more pics. Cross your fingers everyone!

Added note: WOW, if it is Her Birthday, it's an important one.

There are some wonderful stories of Etna past and how villagers went up into the mountains covered in wet cow hides to divert lava flow. Problem is it diverted it to other towns. Ouch. It's (been) against the law since to divert flow.

For not the immediate implications - if this isn't a huge eruption - is the pain in the butt over all the ash that falls on already growing crops and ruins them. Almost impossible to get the 'rain-ah' (phonetic spelling of 'ash' in Sicilian) out of broccoli, greens, etc.

It also makes for hazardous driving when the 'rain-ah' builds up on the roads - slippery as a winter storm over the Rockies.

Beyond that there has been a great deal of 'prophesies' that when Etna finally ‘blows big time’ it the ‘sign’ of the 'beginning of the end of the world'... Let's hope for all our sakes that's not the case now.

having watched the web feed over the past 30-45 minutes i have noticed the diameter of the ground bursts have almost doubled.. where as when i first tuned in there was one single jet of steam/ash now it seems like there are two and the pocket from which it is seeping has widened.. i may be wrong im no expert but its enthralling viewing!

I agree, I just left the cam for half an hour and on returning it is a markedly bigger plume in width and height... great viewing.. I want to rent Silo's apartment! Mind you, I'd miss our aftershocks lol

Just got back - got some shots and need to process before uploading to ATS - More importantly I was on the road and I've seen more people out 'Etna-gazing' than I have in recent history. She's got people in an uproar.

Also, talking to my 'driver'? He's pretty upset. This is going to just ruin so many crops.
Not so good that at all.

And yeah, she's still 'booming' and there are now 4 - FOUR open fishers where before there was only one (besides the top).
