Mt. Etna one of the worlds most active volcanoes is at it again!

Moments ago at approximately 18.30 local time, Mt. Etna - with a belch and a sigh began spewing thousands of metric tons (I can only imagine by the sight) of ash and sand (known as 'rena' in this cities dialect) to the North East.

Recently there's been great speculation over Etna's undersea sister volcano the Marsili and the possibility of her creating devastating tsunamis. Marsili, Europe's largest undersea volcano lays quiet (as far as we know) this evening, while her sister Etna puts on the show.

No earth tremors have been reported, but I can assure you, Etna, for the moment, is up to something. And it's mighty beautiful.

It's hard to say what the clouds are covering at the moment, they rolled into place like stage curtains just after she began her show, but, you can bet I'll be here front and center waiting for when the curtains fall back to reveal her in all her glory once again.

All photos taken just as the blow started from my deck in S. Alfio, Sicily, a small town situated close to Etna.

Sorry about the poor quality/blur. Beyond my control.

It's all original work and yes it just happened but ATS moved my story out of Breaking News. Which in my opinion is a wee bit strange as it's almost impossible to get faster breaking news, with pictures, than this. Oh well.

This is probably the first place on the internet this story hit.

I'll still be keeping an eye on her for ya though.

Consider it a compliment
as ATS has not labeled you a MSM,
so called, reputable source of news and info.
Don't worry. Some media giant will follow your lead.

Clearing up on the Cam

Doesn't seem to be a Major eruption, but Etna is venting out some Ash this evening.

There are more volcanoes erupting today, simultaneously, than in the memory of man. Volcano World lists 540 known volcanoes, 183 of which have erupted within the last 10,000 years.

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/df1095d64dad.gif[/atsimg]

A really impressive chart was recently posted by George Ure on his Urban Survival site. Using data on the date of most recent eruption, George shows us, visually, just how many of the 183 active volcanoes are active right now.

Active volcanoes seem to all be going off at the present time. Mount Etna, in Italy, has been erupting almost continuously since 2001, after last erupting in 1994. Cleveland, in the Aleutian Islands, has been erupting almost continuously since 1997, though historically only erupted once every dozen years or so. Piton de la Fournaise, on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, has been erupting since 1998 though historically has gaps of 10-20 years between eruptions. Baren Island, on the Andaman Islands of India, erupted in 2000, 2005, and 2008 though historically was quiescent for longer times between eruptions, for instance between 1852 and 1991. Llaima in central Chili has been erupting since 1997, though historically had gaps of 5 years on average between eruptions, which were brief.

Yeah it's tough to say at the moment, but believe me, when you live in her backyard and all of a sudden you hear that classic 'Boom' and 'Whoosh' - it's definitely major, lol! And more than likely the prelude for things to come - if she's going to follow her game plan from the past!

Thanks

while I know it must be beautiful, I hope the wind is blowing the ash away from you. I hear it can make quite a mess. We are complaining about pollen right now. It would pale in comparison. be safe.

That it is! A driving hazard (very slippery on the roads) and really does a great deal of damage to crops. Right now the broccoli and cauliflower are just past their peak but enough are left in the fields to really have this do some damage.

We'll see tomorrow!

Thanks

great work, I saw it fast thanks to you. It's still not up on google. you can go play golf there now at verdura golf and spa ha ha. maybe they'll do a deal?
Someone online here the other day did predict a med "quake" but this is close enough if you ask me.
Actually in hindsight, it was probably you.

Is there a connection this time with the sun? Yes? No?
I just think that its a coincidence that after flares etc its normally followed by an earthquake. Now surely The magnetic forces involved pulling at the earth then if there was a sudden large event will this then cause an eruption of some kind?

Sorry but it's a new event and deserves it's own thread, otherwise it doesn't show up as a headline.

Naw, I don't do predictions, so, it wasn't me. I like to report on the real stuff or keep it to collaborative writing.

I can't wait to see if I can get some lava flow shots tonight but it's so cloudy at the moment I can't see much of anything but gray. Will keep trying though.
