A species of giant lizard has been discovered in the forests of the northern Philippines. The 2 metre-long Varanus bitatawa was found by University of Kansas students during an expedition last summer to the heavily populated and largely deforested Luzon Island. DNA testing has placed the fruit-eating species in the Komodo dragon family.
