So we have more powerful earthquakes happening with what seems to be more frequency. Is it possible that we are seeing the Beginning stages of large movements in tectonic plates? A sort of sped up continental drift?

One has to wonder whether changes to our planet are far more complex than we could know.

Earthquake at 7.8 initial reading.

Indonesia has earthquakes all the time. It is one of the most active places on the planet with several volcanoes as well. I expect more, but it wont stop me from going there later this year.

I hope they are ok.
That 7.8 is nothing to sneeze at.

So is it earthquake season or what?

Can someone with the know-how tell me if the amount of earthquakes lately is normal.

Maybe i've just got earthquakes on the mind? I just feel like I've been hearing about quite a lot of good size quakes recently.

My friends and I have been discussing this at great length as we live near Seattle. I don't know if we are having an annual increase in earthquakes and their severity for certain, but it sure does seem like it. Quite a few of my friends and family (not alarmist by nature) have finally taken my advice and made up some disaster plans/kits. I urge everyone to badger loved ones until the do the same. An ounce of prevention and all that.

Everyone keep the people going through these things in your thoughts, and prayers, if you are the religious type. Japan, Chile, Mexico/California, Haiti, and now Indonesia.

That's what I'm asking. These earthquakes have been seriously powerful and appear to be increasing in frequency. Like the Earth is somehow more geologically active all of a sudden. Could it be that the Earth has periodic active and inactive seasons like the sun? Would this be an unreasonable question?

Reuters bulletin for 3 aftershocks. They are only 5.0, 4.9 and 5.1 magnitudes.

From what I've read from other threads all these earthquakes are happening at a normal rate. What I think the real question we should be asking is this: why is there suddenly so much hype about if it such a normal occurrence?

Every year has a disaster that is more popular. Hurricanes one year, tornadoes the next, earthquakes, tsunamis.

Whatever they can get more ratings out of.

In this case, with the Chile earthquake and Haiti, Earthquakes will be popular ALL year.

I disagree.

This is a 7.8 quake.

It is popular on it's own accord.

It doesn't need chile or haiti to make it popular.

It's a 7.8!!

Let's hope the quake didn't wake Toba. It's not far from Toba (supervolcano).

I'm actually kinda worried. All of these earth quakes are hitting every but Alaska. And I know we are due for one and I know California is also due for one, Though they got I hink a 7.2(?) a few days ago.
