Sad times indeed. I attended all 6 of first Shuttle launhes. (Shooting Video for Sub Contractors and Foreign networks.) It was an exciting time. I still have my Press credentials. They are priceless to me. Might post some if there is any interest.

I was at Press Site for STS-1. They moved the Press Site back about another mile for all subsequent launches due to noise/vibration etc. It was in a word.......spectactular. (As you may recall the SRB was white on STS 1 only, before they added orange insulation.)

But the Shuttle has exceeded her prime and these are hard times.

It remains a remarkable vehicle and this is bittersweet.

I really think they should make another 3 shuttles. But with current technology, and even modify the shape of the shuttle a bit--I'm sure they have ideas on some tweaks that would make it more efficient.

It would create more jobs as well as extend our space program.
That Orion project was just silly. They wanna take 300 steps BACKWARDS and make a capsule? Really? Come on...

I always expected the X-33 would be the next gen orbiter...
