You are not alone there.
I also took some University economics courses (as electives during my science undergrad) and never heard of Austrian economics until about 9 years ago. From what I recall, it seemed like Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes were all that ever existed in the world of economics.
Of course, nobody in the classes questioned what came before JMK and when I did, the question was brushed aside with something like "a mish-mash of mercantile policy but JMK saved us from that".
