It's a hard call on what should be allowed. There is always going to be tit for tat threads as that is part of the make-up of very large communities. People are going to want to force their views in discussion no matter what, and moreso if they are fervent in their Beliefs, in many cases at least.

Going a little off topc but I wanted to address this....

Right on. Couldn't agree more. Honestly, both sides are wrong when it comes to this kind of behavior. I mean, its a long hard road that leads to nowhere. Nobody wins. The worst part is that this web-site is being turned into a battle ground of words. It's just silly.

One love everybody. One love.

Yeah, the duplicate "in response" threads are pointless and should be alerted to the mods.

This is the easiest way to get them removed or redirected to the proper thread.

It really bothers me that the mods haven't done anything about this.

I know. It's almost as if they are condoning this kind of behaviour. I hope something is done soon. It's just keeps getting worse.

I also agree. They need to learn to accept and respect other ideas as well.
It is sad that these ego measurements are more frequent. I think this site needs something like one on one threads between the disagreeing parties, so they can prove that the other view is flawed but in a constructive manner and not name calling or some other childish stuff.
And when a thread is started the users can write their comments and if some don't agree with them and want to go into detail why, they can open one on one thread and this VS thread can be viewed in the original thread it can look something like this:

Just a suggestion.

You may have the best library with the best scholars in the world.

But if you took all the pages out of all the books and scattered them everywhere, one page here, one there, hundreds of differant pages on the same topic, all in differant books, it then is ART or an Montage, or just chaos and no longer a book or reference material.

Unfortunately I have noticed an increase in this in recent years on ATS, and I very rarely use it for research on the topics within like I used to.

A search brings up hundreds of threads on the same topics, most of it repeated, and ther is no beginning and middle and end to a debate or research, just pages and pages of the same information, that is not indexed properly, and is very difficult to collate into a "Source" at all.

It is strange this has happened as when I first lurked for a long time on the very original (maybe second phase but over 10 yrs ago) it was the No1 place for facts figures, real research and definitave backround, current events on any topic that is alternative rated, on the whole net.

Due to having to wade through hundreds of thousands of pages of the rant of the messianical, deluded, pys ops, lobbyists, drunks etc, that are allowed to stay here for posterity, well to try and find the answer of any question on ATS unless you have a lot and I mean a lot of time to dig through it all, well you may as well just open a dictionary on a random page, or say "Marmite" because some alines will be harvesting that from the bankers when you look into the depression, according to a thread on ATS.

Why ATS does not have an policy of having ALL theads except maybe BTS or Skunk, being "Approved" by a Mod or staff member is beyond me.

All the badly or false headlines would be gone, as mode could u2u back re-submit with these changes, etc... the same would filter out the drunks, trollers, non sourced of FAAL trash that is allowed to be posted.

The quality of the board would be the best in world, but of course page hits from non members would be a little less?

Elf

Its a pity but the nature I suppose now of the beast.

G'day Phlynx

You seem to have a couple of these "battle threads" in mind.

May I ask a favour?

Would you mind posting links to a couple of these threads so that I can see what you mean?

Kind regards
Maybe...maybe not

Oh come on you people gotta admit it's very amusing to some degree or another. I personally like watching the children fight somethings. i get some good laughs outta it. And when it get's boring i just leave the thread and go onto something I'm really interested in.

I do agree with you that there might be too many counterthreads going on here - dedicated to nothing more than jab after jab - even mocking after mocking, but I don't know what's worse:

  1. Having threads about opposing positions - even if sparked by or currently engaging in mocking another thread.
  2. Or having this very thread's title posted all over Twitter, Facebook and RSS Feeds...pretty much announcing that ATS is full of uncomfortable discourse, and rude or mocking threads.

Are we not treading very thin ice with just the fact that this thread (and more the point, it's headline) exists at all? You might just as well discourage new people from ever coming here outright.

Apologies...as this is just my oh so humble opinion, but I believe that the prestige ATS has now is a product of years of denying ignorance, not enhancing it.

We are truly what we project into the world, for what else is there to dwell upon.

If you don't like something, don't participate in it. It's easy as that.

I could start posting porn threads and make the same argument.

It's not a matter of "not liking them." It's a matter of the fact that they are a form of trolling, not a form of debate. One of those two concepts is welcome here. ;-)

And like I said, I seem to recall the mods saying it wasn't allowed anymore. I can think of one example that got kicked back to BTS. ;-)

No, actually it got kicked to BTS because it didn't fit under any of the forums in ATS. If it supposedly not allowed they would have deleted it, they have absolutely no problem with doing that...
And porn threads are against T&C. In multiple ways.
