G'day ATS,

I came a cross an interesting article today, and it got me thinking.

Magnets 'can modify our morality'

Scientists have shown they can change people's moral judgements by disrupting a specific area of the brain with magnetic pulses.

They identified a region of the brain just above and behind the right ear which appears to control morality.

From another site:

The amazing brain

Volunteers subjected to magnetic pulses to the right temporo-parietal junction, an area that is highly active when we think about the thoughts and beliefs of others, were more likely to make morally dubious decisions. For example, they were asked whether it was right to have let your girlfriend walk across a bridge you knew was unsafe. Because she made it across, the decision was seen as correct; the ends had justified the means.

This is interesting in its own right, but here's what got my tin foil hat twitching folks!

Headphones

The moving coil driver, more commonly referred to as a "dynamic" driver is the most common type used in headphones. The operating principle consists of a stationary magnetic element affixed to the frame of the headphone which sets up a static magnetic field. The magnetic element in headphones is typically composed of ferrite or neodymium.

Several cases have been discussed on ATS regarding horrific crimes by children. The argument usually centres on blaming the parents or society in general. I just wanted to throw this theory out there. The increasing use of ipods, mp3 players, iphones and laptops with headphones and earphones provides us with another possible explanation for this trend

All the best ATS, go easy on the headphones!!

Very interesting. I had read the magnet article, but didn't connect to headphones....Can someone more knowledgeable please compare the strength of the magnets in the 'morality' study w/ the magnetic forces exerted by headphones. TIA.

Best,
Skunknuts

P.S. I enjoyed the witticism of your moral compass being disrupted by magnets metaphor.

Since this was first posted here i have also wondered if the agression and other things effecting people. Could be down to a mixture of all the electronic items we use. Ipods, mobile phones, wifi ect.

Then i read some posts and looked at some other sites showing the earths liquid core is changing in speed and some areas having direction variations. Its been well know for years people exposed to electro magnetic discharges overtime, can become eratic, violent and paranoid ect.

Just my thoughts.

Hey bud, well you're ahead of the game, I completely missed the other thread on ATS! (put glasses back on!!)

I'm not sure if anyone else made the connection so I'll leave this rather than report it to a mod.

I found something interesting:

Study: Headphone Magnets Mess With Pacemakers

Measuring the Fields

Researchers tested eight different models of MP3 player headphones including both the clip-on and earbud models using a gauss meter, which measures the strength of magnetic field produced. Field strength of 10 gauss at the site of the pacemaker or defibrillator has the potential to interact with the implantable device, the study said. The researchers found that some of the headphones had field strengths as high as 200 gauss or more.

They go on to say:

The headphones were placed directly over the patients' chests; however, once they were moved -- even slightly -- the interference stopped.

There were no interactions when the headphones were at least 1.2 inches from the skin's surface, Maisel said.

1.2 inches, hm like just behind and above the ear!!!

Interesting, I'll try and find out how deep this area of the brain is.

Thanks for your post, KF!

So it isnt the rock music or the rap music....it's the headphones!!!!!!!

Seriously though, interesting stuff. Even it goes the way of phrenology.

No, I didn't know there was another thread about the study on ATS, I read the article out 'in the real world,' lol.

This thread should definitely remain open, imo.

WOW!
Good point!

As soon as i read the thread regarding the moral compass i immediately began to think how it can be related to the youth, i was thinking macbooks and cell phones but never thought of headphones! Makes sense.

BTW, you said you didnt know there was a thread on the moral compass theory, yet you mentioned it in the OP, did you just ASSUME we all knew about it already? Wouldnt you want to start a thread on that find first? Just curious to your logic, maybe you had a bluetooth or headphones on as you wrote this.

Hah I couldn't use the excuse of headphones to account for my poor moral compass!!

I think the confusion is in the title, I didn't know there was an ATS thread on this at all when I posted.

I don't know what happened, I haven't done a thread in a while and I guess I forgot to search!

But I think the headphone angle is new, that's why I left it! I'm normally very anti-duplicate thread but in this case there's a slightly different slant.

All the best, KF

According to members on the original posting of this article in the breaking news forum, the magnet needed for this is completely different and much stronger than anything headphones/cellphones have.

Thanks for that!

However I find it interesting that one of the experiments involved subjecting the skull to a magnetic pulse lasting 500 milliseconds, maybe it's the constant bombardment by headphones (for an hour or more which isn't uncommon for listeners) that results in this, we don't know for sure!?

Well, call me a socialist, but I'm all for some impartial government research on the topic.
