Just adding on to DaVinci's excellent points, there was an OpEd piece in the Washington Post recently written by Mike McConnell, who was head of the NSA under both Bush the Elder and Clinton, then moved into the private sector, and then came back to serve as Director of National Intelligence under Bush the Younger. He's back in the private section now, to the extent that there is still a distinction between public/private sectors in the Intelligence field. Anyway, McConnell spends much of that OpEd trying to whip up fear (in his case fear of terrorists and cyber-terrorists) and then suggesting the best way to assuage that fear is, you guessed it, net censorship.

The OpEd is here www.washingtonpost.com...

While Glenn Greenwald discusses the article, as well as the blurring of lines between public and private sector, here www.salon.com...

For the record, I know Greenwald is well left of center and that is going to automatically irritate a fair number of people. That said, Greenwald is also disliked/feared by loyal Democrats because of his willingness to go after Obama and Democrats for their own flagrant abuses of civil liberties and efforts to erode any kind of right to privacy. In this case, no matter what side of the aisle you're on, I think it's disturbing to see how strong the government's resolve is to censor the net, destroy the right to privacy, and stifle dissent. It's also troubling, regardless of ideology, to see the way the government has essentially become an occasionally obstinate but always ultimately loyal, branch of corporate America.

I think a rape video game is extremely disgusting and distasteful. But you cannot censor the internet.

This article appearing in a Fairfax newspaper is hardly surprising, given their bias toward Labor...

This article was clearly designed to give ammunition to our new Minister for stupidity & shoving his morality down our throats, Stephen Conjob, in his efforts to justify internet content in Australia...

On one hand people who use the internet regularly can see thru this BS for what it is, as abundantly evidenced by the poll results on the same publication yesterday...However, and I apologise for repeating myself again, this will only further convince those who either don't use the internet regularly, or are technology shy or the "moral minority" the filter is necessary to combat the evils that fill the internet...

And it is these people who the government will listen to as they are in a majority compared to those of us who use the internet regularly...

I have emailed around 30 parliamentarians of various political persuasions over the last two days to get their views on the content filtering proposal...

Thus far I have received one reply, from Senator Scott Ludlam of the Australian Greens who assures me he will personally oppose the legislation should it be introduced to the Senate and indeed, this is also the policy of the Greens...

I await replies from the others with baited breath...Fortunately I'm not holding my breath

Edit - for understanding...

After reading your story I had to look look at one group I belong too to see what the deal is...
As I expected this game is more than just a game... embed in the exe file is a Trojan.. a virus designed to take your personal info and send to a third party..

Seems the story about it going viral was just a ploy to get folks to go see for themselves thus spreading this virus... on the plus side you really do have a game to play and distract you while they empty your bank account and steal your personal info

How to get rid of it

All the nations involved with ACTA are pushing one part of the agenda. Australia's pushing censorship to protect us from porn; Britain is pushing for a paperless society.

The important points:

There's little difference between big government and big corporations.

Big Brother is more corporate than government.

The NWO is a global corporatocracy, and it's almost a done deal: ACTA dots the last i's and crosses the last t's.

Our only hope is to protect Net neutrality and save the Free Web.

Ah yes...another one of those "save the children" ploys.

In reading the description of the game it seems almost tame compared to what you can find in say..Second Life. Nothing pixilated there, and there are whole areas you can go which cater to rape fantasies, whether it's in the role of victim or perp.

Where is the outrage there? Ah I know...since Second Life comes with a huge dose of advertising by some of the worlds biggest corporations it must be ok.

When I quizzed my co workers today about this they all agreed that it should be banned. " It's for our children's saftey" they said...

This is how control is exerted, with our full consent and knowledge, so we can feel "safe".

Never have truer words been spoken, Merigold
You are right, this is exactly how they control us...

I know how you feel with regard to quizzing your co-workers...I find I am having the same sort of conversations with people I know daily now...And trying to convince people internet content filtering is a bad thing can be a real uphill battle, even if it is potentially rewarding...

I think a rape game may be a good idea, they should do research first with rapers, maybe if they play the game they can control themselves better, who knows

I remember an article saying that when Doom came out, criminal numbers among age of people that played went down, so, it may be worth a research

It's not a rape "simulator", it's just a hentai game, which has a typical story of what hentai games contain. This game has been talked about a lot. People are acting like it's something new, and suprising.

There are THOUSANDS of rape games out there, and add any other fantasy you can think of , it's out there.

It's not really a rape "simulator" It's a hentai game with a perverted storyline, one of probably millions of others games from Japan, which is only one of all subjects you can think of to make a game about.

To put it simply, it's just a game, get over it.

Hmmm....Whilst I don't support internet content filtering in any way, shape or form, I don't agree with you that a rape game is a good idea, Faiol...

If Fairfax hadn't run that article, 99.999999% of the Australian population would be unaware it existed...Now there is a bunch of sickos who have probably got their hands on the game and are playing it as we speak...

And we wouldn't have people and politicians saying "That's disgusting...a rape game...I know, lets filter everyone's internet connection, that will stop this game !!"

Not sure where you got that game from. But the original surely would not contain such a thing. They are a normal big business, Called Illusion, one of hundreds/thousands of others companies which make similar games in Japan. Hentai games is a huge business in japan, and Illusion is a professional company, not some random pervs or hackers.

What your saying is like saying you got a trojan when you bought God of War 3 from the store.

What you downloaded, must have come from someone who had an illegal/downloaded copy and put the trojan inside it then shared it.

Replace rape with murder and you have 90% of the video games out there.

Censor one virtual criminal act and you will have to censor all of them, censorship of something even as this sets the precedent to remove anything "against the law" from forms of entertainment.

... The Ocean's Eleven movies glorify larceny by allowing the protagonists to get away with their heist, shall we ban them too for setting a bad example.

This is the kind of Insanity that will ensue.
Austrailia bans small breasts.

Haha lol

Anyway I'm pretty sure most who play that game would never even think of doing it in real life. Since it's only a game.

I'm pretty sure you don't see the million people who want to play GTA, do the same things in real life. Car jacking, killing prostitutes, crashing your car into people, making stunts, killing random people, going on a rampage lol etc etc etc

It is WAY easier to get a trojan or a virus on your system than having you install a game of this nature. For most people claiming an .exe contains a nude picture of a co-worker is enough to get them to click on it.

Most likely the trojan or virus came with a trainer or mod and one of the people on your other board got infected.

By the way, it is my personal opinion that Symantec is useless antivirus. This comes from almost 30 years in the industry. AVG, Avast ....but symantec..uhh no thanks.

You need to know where to get fresh copy, I downloaded the game to try it out and it had no virus. It's pretty tame and I got bored pretty soon.
This game was released like 5 yrs ago and now they have a problem with it lol. The people who are wailing and crying over the game are retards. If they don't like it dont play no one is forcing them to do it and they shouldn't force others as per their wishes.

Japan has lower rape cases than USA that in itself says a lot. I dont support banning or censorship of any kind no matter what it is. Heck the article doesn't cover about the male rape game which is exactly opposite of the theme of this game. Guess its more easier to sensationalize and gain sympathy from female oriented topic.

Must be the word "rape" that has people responding so emotionally.

Torture, decapitation, breaking limbs, tearing ligaments, cold booded murder of people and animals. No Problems.

Rape? RAPE? My God how on Earth can they allow a game that allows the player to simulate rape through their character! Has the world gone mad?

Strange times we live in...
