Strange quote by George Washington., page

I was reading through the quotes of George Washington and I came across a rather strange quote.

"Some day, following the example of the United States of America, there will be a United States of Europe. "

Now this could have just been a good guess on his part, but did he see something that we did not? Currently there is no United States of Europe, but if our current pattern continues it could be a possability. Of course Europe would have their own style of government and politics but would it really be modeled after the American government?

I just thought this quote seemed a little odd.

Living in Scotland I would hate to see a United States of Europe. Some of the laws to come out of brussels have been plain madness but I think the biggest thing that will stop it is the history, practically no one likes the French hell even French people from Brittany in France hate the French.

Germany has a north south east west devide its crazy.

There's old animostities between the Germans, the Italians, the Greeks it goes on and on they all have something they hate about there nieghbours or others in the European Union so with any luck these old haterids will tie up any sort of new United sates in endless debates and squables to effectivly stop it from happening.

If the United States government works out well enough, then it's very possible that Europe will model its government after America's. It's equally possible that, if America's government fails, we will model ours after Europe's. Every government builds upon the old one, or it least allies itself with the old one. With organizations like the UN, a "United States of Europe" is more likely than ever. It's this kind of thing that could eventually lead us to the a One World Government.

I disagree, I believe George wanted an all powerful central government, and that he would do anything to achieve it, including sending Jefferson out of the country as "ambassador" to keep him out the way long enough to complete his plan to end the First Republic.

And to the OP this factoid makes places that 'strange' quote into a rather uncomfortable context

There was a great deal more to America's favorite Aristocrat, George Washington than most versions of US History would lead us to believe.

What you are saying makes no sense. Europe will model its government after America's? Europe doesn't have a government. Europe is a continent made up of many different countries with different governments. The EU is a financial government and not a political one. Europe is entirely too divided politically and culturally to ever have a unified government. Never gonna happen.

It seems to this observer that there has been considerable effort to reduce the altitude and influence of Jefferson, while inflating George Washington as a revolutionary icon - for over 200 years.

Jefferson translated the indigenous tribal concepts of democratic government in something uniquely American.

George did a fine job of maintaining the eorpean traditional influence of an aristocracy, with occasional compromise to the First Republic.(the Bill of Rights)
