Sorry if this has been asked and discussed verbatim...

But I gotta ask.

~How come UFOs don't cause sonic booms everywhere?~

Seems like the whole world would be blowing up with sonic booms if all UFO reports were real.

When an object passes through the air, it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot "get out of the way" of each other, eventually merging into a single shock wave at the speed of sound. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level at room temperature. In smooth flight, the shock wave starts at the nose of the aircraft and ends at the tail. Because directions around the aircraft's direction of travel are equivalent, the shock forms a Mach cone with the aircraft at its tip.

Sonic Booms

Are most/all UFOs flying slower than 761 mph??? Seems like a lot of reports reflect them travelling at incredibly high rates of speed...

Here is the theory...the UFOs are not passing through the atmosphere but rather bending it around the ship in a sort of gravity well

this is how I was made to understand...a stone thrown into a pond will make a sound and a ripple, but whats going on with the alien craft is that as the stone in this case (outfitted with ETs best space folder tech) is that as the stone comes close to the water, a pocket opens up enough for the stone to fall through, perfectly aligned around the craft...no splash, no ripple, just a very neat and tidy insert that does not effect the surrounding water.

Is that real? meh...who knows. I dont have a spacecraft, but that sounded as good as any other theory.

I'll go with what "SaturnFX" said, and add to it (to include the common most theories and concepts out there...)

The thought of manipulating gravity, and forming a "pocket" of localized space/time to suit your needs also takes care of the acceleration problem (that is, the G-forces that occupants would endure) and also tries to explain the seemingly impossible sudden change of direction, that seems to defy all known laws of physics.

One more aspect is the possibility of time manipulation (note the "space/time" reference above).

These are, actually, the best bits of speculation, at least from what I've read about the topic....

Who knows??

I saw a thread on ATS once that may shed some light on the question you're asking:

perhaps these craft wheren't 'traveling' as we know it. Just maybe, they're 'surfing' a time-space wave that, depending upon the craft's location on the wave [peak vs. trough], they could actually 'eliminate' any and all turbulance [aquatic, atmospheric, or otherwise] by simply not being there when we observe them.

Here's the thread:

My Theory On USO/UFO Propulsion Thread Author: billybobh3

Seems probable enough anyway.

Very good question. Another would be, if piloted, how can the occupants survive the multi G-forces of angular turns? Seems like an elaborate way to make ketchup...

There are many theories seeking to explain or just speculate why there isn't a sonic boom. Likely, some members will post a few ideas about them...a few make good reading and feed off established scientific theories.

In my opinion, we just don't know. The answer requires more information than we have at this time...

Just as an addition...friends and I were on the south coast of England a few years ago. Beer on the beach around 11pm. We saw a red light zigzag from horizon to horizon, from the north and then south towards France. The whole thing took no longer than 4 seconds. We saw it and a separate group of a dozen-plus people further down also saw it. A lot of WTFs and swearing. It could've been anything...no idea what. The point is it must have been breaking the sound barrier and we heard nothing.

I'm often a skeptical guy and make no claims to what this was. It was simply a UFO.

Could it be that what you saw was in space and not in the atmosphere?

As far as the bubble theory goes (as mentioned by other posters - thanks BTW), if they created some type of field around the craft, wouldn't the field itself cause the boom?

I am in agreement with SaturnFX (star for thee) when he postulates that atmosphere is somehow bent around the machine and in effect I would imagine an object pulls the destination to the pilot rather than pushing the pilot to the destination?

Atmosphere is pulled past the machine from front to rear and this allows instantaneous movement but of course this does not explain the massive gravity forces on the occupants unless a by-product of the propulsion system is total control over gravity?

I once watched a UFO drifting above with my home with other witnesses before dimming and then “folding in on its self” before zipping off toward Edinburgh castle a few seconds later in total silence so I would subscribe to the theory mentioned in the second post.

I can't for the life of me recall the movie, but it dealt with the ability to manipulate time. The characters in the movie were moving faster through time than everything else. I remember them explaining it was like if you were traveling on a highway at 50 mph and you were passed by a car traveling at 500 mph it would appear as though the car moving at 50mph was standing still.

If Alien craft were able to manipulate space-time in the same way they wouldn't actually be moving fast enough to create a sonic boom, however to the observers on the ground the UFO would appear to move at unimaginable speeds. So in essence, their speed doesn't actually fluctuate, just their position in time.

Perhaps this propulsion is achieved in pulses of different duration, hence the quick directional changes in a lot of the sightings.

No idea, my take is that when they ionize the matter around them, it creates its own... well little planet. Maybe the sound dose not exit it?

SaturnFX's theory also accounts for why the 'UFOs' don't burn up when speeding so jauntily through our atmosphere.

Great question. I have no answer to give you but only another question.

We have light travelling around us at all times and at speeds faster than that of sound. So why no "light" sonic booms? Frequency perhaps? Weight of object? Perhaps UFOs are not as massive as we percieve them.

Same thing with meteorites and space debris that bombard the planet constantly.

Perhaps our ideas of how sound and light opperate need some maintenance.

Great question.

It could have been. Identifying the distance of an aerial object is almost impossible.

I'm a known skeptic on ATS. My account was to illustrate that UFO sightings aren't always wishful thinking. They happen.

The wind and storm do not affect the ether craft (Tesla said of his
aircraft and he tested it) so why should the craft effect the air.
Something we can't understand and since the science of the ether
was all Tesla's we don't have to look very far to find answers
but the library at Los Alamos in locked up.

in physics, the photon is considered mass-less, so maybe that is why it would not produce a sonic boom in the atmosphere.

Meteors and meteorites, along with space junk falling to earth do produce sonic booms.....www.imo.net...

It's a common sense among UFO researchers, that supposed alien spacecrafts use powerful generators that create a strong EM field around them, preventing the action of physical barriers, as air pressure, gravity, etc. Another theory is that these EM fields can bend the space-time tissue, putting the crafts in some kind of "twilight zone" between 3th and 4th dimension, not affected by physical laws. I guess that Bob Lazar explained how UFOs work.

I knew there was a reason to ask a basic (perhaps naive) question, that explanation I can grasp - Thanks.
