Who are these people who feel the need to oppose everything and anything... as if their life depended on it?

I've got a long-time friend who refuses to agree with anyone about anything... and it's like she's been put upon this earth to oppose EVERYTHING. I've seen this happen time and time again with other people as well. Are some people's thought processing so easily manipulated by outside forces... that they're not even allowed to agree on even the most obvious of solutions? What is their purpose... other than to throw a monkey wrench into the works? Somebody help me here.
