It has been mentioned that these taxes (tanning, tobacco products) are perhaps a form of deterrence. The price is higher so less people will partake of the product/service. I for one do not need the government attempting to control what I do with these deterrent taxes. I do not tan, nor do I find women who tan excessively attractive, however to tax them 10% for making the choice to purchase this service is ridiculous.

Is it racist? Clearly this tax does indeed target Caucasians exclusively.

rac·ism:

1.
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

It is not exclusive upon whites, it is exclusive to anyone who wants to knowing use a product and service that causes cancer.

I know Mexican and Arab girls that use or have used tanning facilities, ie before school dances or special events.

I agree with the person that said this, in jest, that this tax is sexist. Nearly all users of tanning facilities are women, oh and we had quite a few gay men that visited the same spot I had used. So, it is sexist and homophobic.

But not racist.

to be "racist" it does not have to apply exclusively to one race, just affect one race disproportionately, at least, that is how things have always worked when non whites have been doing the wailing...................

I am no fan of any of this victim seeking racist stuff, but funny to see it from the other side of the racial coin

I am a white woman.

I have used tanning salons.

This law is not racist because there is only one race and this law covers all of us.

Humans.

Nice spouting the government's tired divisive line of racism, well indoctrinated as the thread shows.

Its about time tanning salons had their fair share of taxes like other businesses.

If you would like to believe that it is racist, fine.

Be sure to tell all white people to only go spray tanning, as that is not included in the tax, it's more popular now anyway as many people don't like the cancer risk of the beds.

Racist? Maybe. Maybe not.

It is nothing more than Government getting a firmer grip on our liberties to choose what, where, how and why we do what we do.

When will we all put a stop to the constant intrusion. I am telling you, pretty soon they will attempt to ban people from going to church or tax you on on other simple pleasures you might enjoy. Remember as a free people we shuld be able to engage in activities that do not infringe on the rights of others.

How many of adrenaline junkies are willing to pay a parachuting tax or a bunjie jumping tax. What next a tax to get in your car? wait we already have that in the form of a registration, inspection, license, gas tax to drive to work to only get that taxed too.

I give up!! hurry up an bury me face down so I can get screwed in death too. wait there is a death tax too isn't there?

There are plenty of other races who use tanning beds as well. Did you know blacks tan? Oh my goodness!

Mexicans do it, asians do it. I know plenty of non-white women who tan. This isn't racism. It's a tax on a stupid activity.

I don't know if anybody has thought about this or not but, This new 10% tanning tax is predominantly imposed on Caucasians only.

Predominantly and only? those are contradictory terms.

Now where I live, I see a fairly equal amount of White, Hispanic and Asian patrons at my tanning salon...and a good number of blacks as well. Maybe it's because the city I live in is not only the most affluent city in the US, it is also very culturally diverse.

I see no racism in the tanning tax. But, hey, keep clutching at straws...you may find the needle.

EDIT:
You know what gets me...if this health care bill is so bad...why is it that the biggest thing anyone can seem to pick on is the tanning tax? This is like...what?...the 4th or 5th thread on this subject.

Oh noes...I gotta pay an extra 10% for my vanity...what has the world come to

Alternatives to avoid tanning tax:

Sun bathe
Spray on tan
buy your own tanning bed

1. This is a tax on an activity that is performed almost entirely by Caucasians, I would hope everyone can see this point as self-evident, if not use Google to confirm.

2. Racism is defined as - discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race.
Link

3. Therefore since the tax discriminates against one race it is racist.

It can't be spelled out much simplier than that.

It doesn't matter if the reason for this tax put forth by the government is that it is a sin tax. It is the same as when all voters had to pass literacy tests at the polls before they could vote. These tests were supposedly to ensure that all voters were literate before voting but since many blacks were much more likely to be uneducated at the time it had a disparate impact on their race. So even though this is touted as a sin tax it doesn't change the taxes actually impact.

I'm sure this has already been said but this has got to the the most cockamamey idea as to why it was put in there. They originally wanted to target elective medicine like botox but they have a lot more money and a stronger base with more lobbyists. So they pawned it off onto tanning booths as a new way to thieve money under the pretense of it having cancer causing qualities (which it does). They don't care about that one lick but it goes nicely with a bill all about healthcare.

There is no underlying bigotry unless they were being prejudiced against idiots as only idiots would use tanning booths in the first place. You want to prematurely age your skin so when you're 25 you look 45? So you develop skin cancer that needs to surgically removed? So you can look like one of the idiots of the now from -gag- "Jersey Shore"? Go right on ahead.

What boggles my mind is that out of all of the industries out there to tax, they choose tanning salons.

I'm sure we could think of many major industries that are 10 times worse on our health.

think about how many tanning salons there are though...

that means more places to tax = more money to make from said tax.

Why wouldn't you tax Fast Food vists over Tanning visits?

I would imagine that obesity costs the health-care industry alot more dollars then developed skin cancer from tanning.

FACTS:

Over 300,000 Americans die each year from Obesity

vs

Over 9,600 Americans die each year from Skin Cancer - and not all of these are due to tanning.

Unfortunaly all this will do will cost more jobs if less people decide to go to tanning salons.

Our government has really and honestly gotten to the point of ridiculousness.

This health care bill will open up the doors for the government to tax you for all manners of things.

No, it is not self-evident and I used google to try figuring it out. You should have posted statistics. I searched several phrases and found nothing.

Did ya ever bother to think that maybe these new taxes aren't prejudiced, but rather an act of deterrence? I.E. smoking is bad for you, soda is bad for you, tanning is bad for you, et c.

Did ya ever both to think that maybe these new "sin" taxes are a great way to tax the poor under a regressive and/or flat tax? Did ya ever think that maybe they are a way of increasing taxes in a hidden underhanded way? The crime-for-profit ideas under which ordinary behavior is turned criminal is a great way to turn the US into a police state but not much else.

I don't use tanning booths, nor do i condone there use as they do cause skin cancer, which is one of the worst types of cancer. Having said that it is MY OPINION and not law. Just because I, and likely thousands of others, say you should not use tanning beds, where do I have the right to MAKE you not use tanning beds? Even worse, what if I stood outside the door of the tanning salon and made you pay me 10% of your total bill just to let you out for using the place, and my justification is that I think tanning is bad for you so i'm going to make you pay me in hopes that it deters you.

WHAT!?!

If that sounds rediculous to you then congratulations, you are sane and have a rational mind. This people is exactly what the administration is using as there excuse to control you. is this tax racist as heck, you bet! Is it meant to make the government more revenue? Yup!! (duh) Is it for your benefit and will it make you stop tanning? More than likely no. My point is keep an eye out for new taxes and laws that are "for your benefit" because in truth the only one who benefits from this is big government. Ths is a federal tax, states get nothing out of it. The reason they said this HCR bill would help reduce the defecit is because they are finding underhanded and nigh criminal ways of leeching money from the American people, all for "our benefit."

Please America, wake up and smell the load of BS that has just been dropped on your head, this administration has f-ed up so bad that they cannot even hide their own agendas anymore. The only thing they do is point the finger, blame others, and tell you what THEY KNOW is best for you.

Bush screwed up, true, but God knows the racist @$$holes we have in place right now care only about keeping themselves elevated above the masses in a seat of power. Mark my words, Obama WILL use martial law by 2012 to either convert or eliminate those of us who do not follow this false messiah.

Tax on tanning? No court would find that constitutional. I guess Barry had a bad experience at a tanning salon in Kenya.

This is great news. I hope this tax is imposed. Maybe then many of those in my generation will see the error of their ways in voting for Obama and band of Socialist cronies. Let them reap what they sowed and maybe in 2012 they will vote sensibly.

I could be wrong and you could be right I but I usually like to follow the path of least resistance when to comes to the truth.

And being "lazy" about the truth is exactly what they want you to be and how they shove this BS down our throats all the time.

In fact, they're (obama administration) are counting on there being a majority of Americans that think the same way.

Here you go...

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), more than 1 million people use one of the 25,000 tanning salons in the U.S. on an average day. Of these, most are Caucasian females ages 16 to 29.
