New hominin found via mtDNA

A previously unknown human ancestor may have coexisted with Neanderthals and early modern humans, German researchers report online in Nature today (March 24).

For the first time, the scientists identified the novel hominin using mitochondrial gene sequencing of bone fragments, not fossils. The genomic analysis also revealed a hitherto-unknown migration from Africa to Eurasia just under one million years ago. www.the-scientist.com...

A new species to add to the human family tree? Looks like a new migration, anyway, and an exciting use of mDNA as a research tool. I'm looking forward to seeing the ramifications of this discovery play out. Much as the Hobbit in southeast Asia, demonstrates, the story of Mankind's journey ain't over by a long shot!

I want to know more. Which modern line is it most like?

I find the idea that ALL mtDNA lines of humanity can be found in the modern human to be highly suspect. Lines can and do die off.

So, which modern line does this fragment find most similarity too?

The science is good. The conclusions drawn - I find them suspect and limited in serious consideration.
