A huge explosion has apparently occured at an ammunitions dump at the US Base in Kirkuk, Iraq. Iraqi police say the explosion was a result of a rocket attack.
Smoke covered nearly the entire city as rockets and shells were detonated by the initial blast. There are no reported casualties.

Reuters

Early reports are that there has been a huge explosions in the oil producing city of Kirkuk in Northern Iraq.It is believed to have been the result of a rocket attack on a ammunitions dump near a U.S installation.

"You can see rockets flying and landing all over the base," said Reuters reporter Adnan Hadi. "The windows of buildings close to the base have all been shattered."

This appears to be a deliberate, concerted attack on a U.S arms store. Reports are coming in of a barrage of Katyusha rockets, a multiple launch system commonly fired from a truck.

Kirkuk is the second biggest oil producing region in Iraq and is situated near the Kurdish region of Iraq.

Thanks Sanctum, 0951 and ofcourse Banshee.

Anyone have any idea about what kind of munitions would be stored there ?

Those places are sure to be well guarded so we should expect U.S and Iraqi casualties.Anyone know which regiments are based there?

If it was a Katyusha rocket, it appears they are multiple launch.(truck) Not shoulder launch.
This could comfirm the multiple blasts.

I was there when this happened. It was a rocket attack, but it landed in the very dry grass and ignited it. The grass fire spread too quickly for our Fire Department to get it under control. They backed off and let it burn. There were many types of old Iraqi Ammo stored outside on open pads. Those are what exploded. After they heat up so far, they just explode. We had American Ammo outside also. None of our stuff was damaged. It was quite a spectacle. Like an extreme fireworks show. No one on the base was killed or badly injured. Everyone took the proper precautions.
