Greetings everyone but especially to Phage, Weedwacker, OzWeatherman, Chadwickus, and any other specialist I left out....Welcome.
As most of you know, when Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon, after his famous words, upon describing the likeness of the lunar surface said..."It
has a stark beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert of the United States. It's different, but it's very pretty out here."
That always struck me, not only because of the obvious reasons, but more so because I grew up in the High Desert of Nevada so I guess it always made
me take a little pride in the fact that he compared it to a likeness where I was raised.
Now, I don't believe we have ever been to the moon. If we did...awesome, but I realize film had about a 60 year leap on "space" flight and had
mastered flying to the moon by way of imagination before the wrights lifted off for the first time, and perhaps that is what was really important. Not
that we went, but that we believed we could. Telling someone they can achieve anything they set their hearts on is better then telling them they will
fail. Perhaps the psyche of the American public and indeed that of the world was better served believing in it, even if it wasn't real.
The problem is, I believe that dream was crushed the day Kennedy was shot and his vision erased, who in all honesty really wasn't that interested in
space, but for the political reasons. I believe he saw space as an alternative to war, as something that could soak up the surplus, manage the
population, provide Jobs and many other benefits which could lead men out of fighting and into true peace. I don't believe that is what Johnson had
in mind. Johnson was a good ol boy who liked custom designed sweat pants that didn't make his balls itch and Johnson also liked war. How could you
not if you owned part in Bell Helicopter, a NASA contractor not to mention, but most importantly the manufacturer of the Huey Helicopter. Space was
not a pay off for Johnson, but a dead Kennedy was, especially a Kennedy that wanted to keep us out of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Vietnam public, the
other two not so much. Anyway I digress. Back to Nevada.
Again, I grew up in Northern Nevada. Now, after "Top Gun" left San Diego (where I now reside) it moved to a Naval Air Force base not to far from
where I lived in Nevada called Fallon Naval Air Base which is where "Top Gun" is at to this day, but that is not what I'm going to talk about,
though I'm sure it does have a link.
Outside of Fallon there is a mountain made from sand called....get this....Sand Mountain. It is actually a very well known place to anyone into Sand
Rails, Quads, and dirt bikes much like Glamis is to southern California/Arizona except for that Sand Mountain is very distinct as you will see below.
My assumptions should be easy to figure out from the pictures I'm going to post, but I will ask you to keep in mind that over 40 years of wind have
been blowing on this mountain, but again I don't think it should be that hard for anyone to figure out. With that said, lets look at some pics.
Here is a picture of Sand Mountain from Google earth overhead. It has the coordinates at the bottom of the pick so if you would like to Google Earth
it, please do.
Keep in mind, that Sand Mountain being in the desert usually has not a cloud in the sky in the spring and summer months which is very important as I
will show you in this next pic of the moon.
I didn't fool you right? Obviously from the tracks on the ground, which are way to many for a rover to make, it is not the moon. It's Sand Mountain.
(retouched for moon effect)
Lets try this one.
Well is it the moon or is it Sand Mountain?...Compare to this.
Try this...
against this from Google earth....
How about this...
at a different angle but still very close to this...
Look at this chroma key sky. Does life get any better for a developer of film?
or this...
Can't you almost just see the LEM sitting next to one of those campers?
Now you might be surprised to find this out, but right around this mountain is regular dirt. Well I shouldn't say regular like Brown dirt, though
there is some, but what's really neat is the ORANGE dirt from the all of the minerals that come up through the water table which is very high, not to
mention Cancerous...
Next I want to show you the dust a rover kicks up compared to a sand rail. Tell me the difference 1/6th of gravity is making because I can't see
it.
Hadley/Rile?
or Sand Mountain?
Take in the bigger picture...
All righty then. I am done for now. I do not know if the backdrop is San Mountain, I only knew that the mountains on the moon looked familiar....You
be the judge.
Peace
