CAIRO (AP) -- The Arab League chief wants the 22-nation bloc to engage Iran directly over concerns about its growing influence and its nuclear activities, in a step that could undermine U.S. and Israeli efforts to isolate the country, diplomats said Tuesday.
Senior U.S. officials including Defense Secretary Robert Gates toured the region last month to urge Arab allies to back Western efforts to increase the heat on Iran over its nuclear program, including through tougher economic sanctions.
Arab diplomats said Secretary-General Amr Moussa will present his proposal in a policy document to a two-day Arab League leaders summit in Sirte, Libya, that starts Saturday. The leaders are expected to discuss a range of regional issues, including stalled Middle East peace efforts and Iran.
BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 23 (UPI) -- An armed Hezbollah militia is a valid deterrent against the lingering threat to Lebanese sovereignty from Israel, the Lebanese defense minister said.
Witnesses reported that tanks opened fire at their homes as bulldozers destroyed farm lands and trees located close to Iriz crossing and the northern borders of the Gaza strip. Witnesses added that Israeli army helicopters with providing tanks with air support.
“The fight for peace is the only way to implement” that vision of a Jewish and democratic state, and “I don’t want to choose between those two values,” Livni, the former foreign minister, said in an address Monday to a large group of AIPAC leaders at the group’s annual policy conference.
GAZA, March 23 (Saba) --The military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, An-Naser Salahuddin Brigades (PRC), claimed responsibility Tuesday for launching a rocket at the southern Israeli town of Sderot, according to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). The PRC's website said that a group was able last night to bombard the town of Sderot with Al-Nasser rocket type 3. Meanwhile, the Israeli army said yesterday that four Palestinian homemade rockets were launched at Sderot while one missed the target and fell in a town near the border with the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinians reported Thursday that two people were wounded by IDF fire on two separate incidents in the Gaza Strip. The emergency chief in Gaza said that one is seriously wounded having been shot in the back near the Sufa crossing.
It was also reported that a fisherman was hit by Navy fire on a separate incident. (Ali Waked)
An IDF force numbering 17 soldiers crossed the border fence with Lebanon at Ghajar village and took up a post on one of the hills there, Lebanese news agencies reported. The IDF responded that it was a routine operation, and that the force had crossed the fence but not the border. (Roee Nahmias and Hanan Greenberg)
A Qassam rocket fired by Palestinians from the Gaza Strip exploded within the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council. There were no reports of injuries or damage. (Shmulik Hadad)
Israel Defense Forces soldiers arrested five wanted Palestinians terror suspects in the West Bank on Thursday night. Three were arrested in the Jenin area and two in Bethlehem. The detainees were taken in for questioning by the security forces. (Ynet)

Israeli soldiers and Hamas fighters have clashed near the Gaza Strip border, according to reports. Arab media report two Israeli troops have been killed east of Khan Younis. This has not been confirmed by Israel officials.
GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli tanks advanced into the Gaza Strip on Friday after the worst clash with Palestinian fighters in 14 months killed two on each side, and Palestinian sources reported more casualties in the fighting.
They said five Israeli tanks and two armored bulldozers advanced from the east firing shells at targets near the town of Khan Younis in the center of the narrow coastal enclave.
Hazem Gora’ani was critically wounded at 9AM on Thursday morning when the Israeli navy fired at his fishing boat. He was brought to Shifa’a hospital in Gaza City with serious head wounds where he underwent emergency surgery. His condition is currently too unstable to risk removing the pieces of shrapnel lodged in his brain.

Syria and Libya teamed up Sunday to pressure Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to quit peace talks with Israel and return to violence, delegates to an Arab leadership summit said. Israeli air force have practiced simulated strikes at Iran's nuclear facilities using airspace of at least two unidentified Arab countries, a newspaper published in east Jerusalem reported.
According to Al Manar paper, several Israeli combat jets carried out in late February bombing drills "targeting" known Iranian nuclear sites "in two Arab countries in the Persian Gulf, which are close territorially with the Islamic republic and cooperate with Israel on this issue."
Al Manar said Israel had received the permission to use the airspace from the top leadership of these countries and Washington "gave a blessing" to Tel Aviv to conduct these exercises.
