Yes it does suck to lose sleep all the time. Everytime I get a brief on mission planning i always have to get my notebook and pen but then again missions are always detailed like that.

This is all opinion, how it seems in my experience...

Being smart or not is a very simplistic way to look at things and isn't that useful past school to label it in such a way. In my experience I am pretty sure as long as your IQ is at an average or better level, you can understand and learn things fine. It has more to do with attitude and mind state, patience, and willingness to learn.

The brain organizes and forgets things that it doesn't find important. Maybe the things you are forgetting are things the mind is automatically not putting effort into remembering. In a spiritual way, any thing related to our slave jobs is truly not important, what day it is, etc. what time it is, if you are in the moment, etc.

My mind does not work very fast. If you are going to appreciate the small things in life and tackle deep questions, it serves you better to have a mind that will take it's time. To be a marathon runner instead of a sprinter.

I can't solve a rubiks cube in 7 seconds but I know that doesn't have anything to do with how I learn new things and enjoy life on an intelligent level. I too have felt that my mind has really slowed down, I have trouble with simple things sometimes - especially if I get tired, but I can go pretty deep into thought and dream like crazy, stop my thoughts etc. That sort of mind does not fit perfectly into the status quo world.

Awareness itself should be requiring mind power to take it all in, and that should slow anyone down that's not stuck in this play of flesh and bone and social situations - those that are dedicate 100% of their brain power into so-called life and "Their own problems" and so they appear to be really good at it. Go a little deeper, and you may find yourself appearing slow... but those who seem really fast and quick on their feet have things very simplified, and basically do the same thing everyday.

Again, just my opinion, a theory really.

Well I am 25 now and I have been in the army for almost 7 years but I don't think im old enough to have that issue happen to me yet. I think it might be the food since it has so many ingredients in it that is harmful but maybe ill get wiser once I return to school after my career ends.

Have you spoken about this with your fellow soldiers? Are they experiencing similar? It may just be fatigue you know, but I don't know, could be something else also. It is very well know fact that due the fatigue, one's mental capabilities tend to decrease.

How else you are feeling about your job in army? Do you feel it is a proper work for you, and so on? Maybe if you have somekind of inner repulsion building up towards it, it may affect your ability to work as a soldier.

I dunno, those are just few bad guesses. I think that you are in need of long vacation, maybe it will restore your mental capabilities to the level they used to be.

I also quote almost every post because I forget what the poster said in the previous post and I know this angers a few but my speech is also slowed to where I earned the nickname "slo-mo" and other babble. Although I can agree that having a mindset to learn can also lead to a faster gain of knowledge and increase learning capacity but I just know that I can do better then this if I can acquire the proper motivation to learn new ideas.

Edit: My fellow soldiers seem more ignorant then me so I think they are also affected but it is their choice as well to remain in the dark so I can't always vouch for them.

You're probably onto something here. I find my job repulsive since all it does is benefit contractors that make way more money then me and use us as tools of war. This may also be the reason I don't want to learn new things in the army because it does not benefit mankind in a way but only time will tell if thats true.

Can it be a side effect of the stress. Iraq cannot be a number one holiday destination for anyone.

Just a thought.

I don't know if my work environment is the problem but perhaps it will make my mind feel better if I was stateside but in 2 weeks I shall find out soon enough.

That's just the point, you are learning new ideas. Most people by 25 have learned all they ever will. I know that sounds almost unbelievable but it's probably even a lower age than that for 90+% of the population. Your mind is slower now because it operates with a much wider perspective.

A very basic suggestion would be like someone said, vacation. If that's not possible, then simply rest - sleep more often, take naps, limit your "media" intake and dialogues and interactions with others. Assuming you are working 8+ hours a day (and if I remember right for you it's even more) your mind is having all it can take and needs a break. If you truly feel your mind is deteriorating.

I don't think your mind is deteriorating though, I have felt much the same way as your OP describes, and honestly it might be slowing down, but I don't think it's a bad thing.

I hope you are right. I don't want to curse myself to the inane life that my older brother leads but if I have reached my limit for learning then I am doomed to obscurity for life.

I've read that lack of sleep will lower your IQ. I also read it will stay temporarily lower even if you do catch up on your sleep. Stress is bad too. It does things to your body in my opinion that are not good. If you want your brain to develop new neurons, do things different. If it's safe to do, you could even try doing the same old tasks you are used to doing with a different method. Variety in life increases the number of neurons in your brain I believe I read. Have you ever tried to write something with your other hand? It's not easy. Using different muscles or different hands to do the same things we are used to doing seems strange. I believe I'd rather explore with different routes of travel, different methods of problem solving, different puzzles, etc. Get out of any rut you are in and seek change and you may find something you like. If not, you probably developed a few extra neurons in the process.

As far as my IQ goes, I took one of those free self test online IQ tests back a few years ago and one more recently. My score went up so much that I wondered how valid those tests were. It's possible that I had more patience than the first time I took one of those tests. Free online IQ tests are like puzzles themselves. You can learn how to do them better by recognizing patterns in numbers, words and shapes.

I need to get more sleep myself. I've been up all night long and occasionally go a few days with only 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night.

So by doing different thing on different times I can increase my brain capacity? I will give it a shot however its kind of hard to do different things when your stuck in the same location with the same equipment for a whole year so ill give it a try when I reach the states. Thanks for the advice.

I don't know if pills are the answer but if it will get me out of my situation then I might consider it. Most likey I will improve over time when I have free time to educate myself.
