Alright fellow ATS members, this is my first time reaching out to all of you for help. I've been offering my insights on spiritual/religious topics across the boards since I joined, now I'm asking all of you for help. The specifics concern an entity, with a physical manifestation, that bore the name/title/honorific of "Demitricus Devil." An alternate spelling might be "Demetricus Devil." I already did a variety of name searches, word etymology and associated things and I found this:

Demi - this either mean "Earth Mother" in Greek, or "lesser" in French.
Tri - this is seemingly just the numerical prefix meaning three.
Cus - apparently this is a Scottish name/term meaning "King"
Devil obviously holds certain connotations.

When put together, this entity seems to have been identifying itself as either the "Lesser three Kings" or the "Three Mother Kings/Queens." Or something along those lines.

My question to all of you is this: have any of you ever read about anything like this in any books, or encountered something claiming to be it? Maybe it's a religious demon and I don't know? I'm not personally being threatened by it anymore, and it's been gone for going on 5 years now. But my curiosity still gets the better of me.

Concerning physical descriptions, this is the best I can give for the few occasional times it manifested as a method for intimidating and terrorizing myself, or those around me who also encountered it:

Moderately tall in stature, at least 7 to 8 feet. Long, slender legs seemingly human. Really thin waist, slowly becoming a thicker upper torso. Wide, strong shoulders. No arms, instead it appeared to have bat-like wings. There was no face or true head, just a lump of fur (I believe it was fur). In the center of this lump of fur was a rectangular red glow, which I took to be it's "eye" as it would seemingly stare at me, or my friends though it. A mix of black and white fur seemed to cover it's entire body. Though one of my friends said it appeared with scales to him once. I never saw the scales.

Other attributes that I can remember... it didn't have any type of speech. Occasionally I thought I could hear low growls or moans from it. In dreams myself, and my friends, reported that it spoke to us telling us that it was hunting. I'm willing to attribute that to simply dreams though, and being scared. Appearances... it was usually perched somewhere first, always after dark and most times near woodlands. Never up high in a tree though. Usually on boulders, outdoor furniture, etc.

I'm not really sure what else anyone might want or need to help identify this entity. If you need more information go ahead and ask and I'll try to remember more details about it. This was a good deal of years ago, but seeing as I haven't had any recent paranormal encounters I thought I would start with one that has kept me curious for years. Any help would be appreciated.

* Edit *

Realized I left off one of the most important bits of info I could give: all of this happened in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.

Well, given that it usually appeared in wooded areas, it almost sounds like Pan to me.....

Pan (Greek Πάν, genitive Πανός), in Greek religion and mythology, is the companion of the nymphs,[1] god of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. His name originates within the Greek language, from the word paein (Πάειν), meaning "to pasture".[2] He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. With his homeland in rustic Arcadia, he is recognized as the god of fields, groves, and wooded glens; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism.[3]

Pan

Now, the only problem with that assertion is that the characteristics that you describe really do not fit the characteristics of Pan. So, I am probably way off base. However, that is what initially comes to my mind.

Honestly, I have never come across any mention of this name or any description of a creature like you describe. Actually, in a way, it sounds like some of the strange "aliens" that some claim to encounter. That's kind of weird.

I'm sorry, Scribe, that I can't be more assisstance to you, but this one has me stumped.

The name came in one of the dreams that my friend had. Which does mean the name might have absolutely nothing to do with the actual entity. Not having any other point of reference for it though, we always called it the Demitricus, or "Demi" for short. The two possible spellings on the name is because it was only spoken in a single dream. It was never written or spelled out for us.

I've thought before that maybe the individual syllables of the name might mean something, but it never lead me anywhere. Eventually I ended up just learning the "demi/deme" "tri" "cus" breakdown. If anyone knows another way to break it down I'd be interested to learn if it has other meanings.

The exact 'why' is a bit complicated since it wasn't our intent to find it. As one poster suggested it sounds reminiscent of Pan, and I was a Neo-pagan at the time. The woods were one of the spots myself and my group of Neo-pagan friends used to meet. We never tried to reach anything negative though, we just read from Raymond Buckland books and practiced his sabbat rites and such.

It was on a Summer sabbat that our group thought we'd encountered some kind of woodland spirit. We assumed it had something to do with Druidism, but, I don't know much about Druids so I can't say for sure. This 'woodland' entity manifested as orbs and mists to us. It was shortly after that (probably a month) that the orbs and mists disappeared and we started seeing this thing around.

All of us actually told our parents once we all believed we'd seen the same thing. Our parents thought it was probably just a deer or something. They didn't believe us. But we kept asking kids around school if they'd seen any weird animals around their neighborhoods. Naturally we got all kinds of responses, but nothing seemed to match our entity.

The only one of us to 'hear' the name was my then-best-friend Adam. Which is why I'm not sure if the name means anything. No one else was given any kind of a name.

As for defending ourselves, we were all in high school at the time and none of us really knew much of anything about spiritual entities. Like I said earlier, our primary source of information then was Raymond Buckland. The most we ever tried was camping out in Adam's yard (he had a long plot of land leading up to a small woodland) to try and catch any signs of it. When we did, several times, we'd form a ring of hands and try to will it to leave, or, if that wasn't working try to keep each other from having panic attacks.

I don't really think we had any effect on it. I don't know if it should be classified as alien, or demon, or cryptozoology, or spirit, or even Native American (several of us had Aztec, Cherokee and Illinois in our family history).

To people like 'kerazeesicko' - I'm not here to spin a tale and start a serial. It's an anomalous event from my life, and if someone here knows anything I'd appreciate that. If no one does then this thread will peter out and I'll keep searching elsewhere.

The description almost sounds like the descroption of the mothman

A boy's name of Greek origin. Demetricus has never been a common name in the United States. Meaning: Greek: a short form of Demetrius.

This then lead me to Demetrius which is apparantly a romanisation of Dimitrios, which in turn lead me to
here. Which tends to mean follower of demeter/loves the earth/earth mother. Which is probably a similar route to what you took can I assume?

There was also a Saint Demetrius and two mentions of the name Demetrius in the new testament.

The name Demetrius occurs in two places in the Bible, both in the New Testament:

* a Diana-worshipping silversmith who incited a riot against the Apostle Paul (Acts 19:24-41)

* a disciple commended in 3 John 1:1

That's about all I can find at a quick glance at the moment before heading bedwards, I'll have another looksie tomorrow night after work.

@ Shagreen Heart: I honestly never thought of it that way. Day-met-ree-cuss is how my friend pronounced it when he told us. But your version could also make sense if it was a negative entity. Fooling us into worrying over it's name and origin makes sense. I'll have to think about that, thank you for the insight.

@ KyleOrtonArmy and Ventian: I own Dante's Divine Comedy, but I only just recently bought it (little under a year ago) and I haven't yet read it. As far as I know none of the people who saw this thing ever owned or read the Divine Comedy. Concerning Ventian's second half - I don't doubt for a minute that my friends and I were really, really weak and unenlightened when all of this happened. I've become much more learned in religious and spiritual lore since then, but, during this time we had no idea how to go about anything of this nature.

@ MMP12: Batman has arms, and a head with a face. Ours had neither. And I don't visit the city very much, so I won't comment on it's "Gothamness."

@ Munkey66: I've read John Keel's book on Mothman in the time since this all happened. And while reading it never struck me that this thing was Mothman. The picture you linked wasn't included in any of Keel's work so this was my first time seeing it; it's similar. Larger wings, thinner legs, wider shoulders and ours didn't have 2 eyes, if the red thing was an eye at all.

@ Phoenix: did you actually find 'demetricus' as a name? I tried searching name databases, but could only ever find Demetrius, Demeter, Dimitri and the like. If that is really a 'demetricus' name in a name base, please link me. The "Demeter" aspect I was familiar with already. Excluding the sinister feelings brought on by this things appearance it did seem very tied to the Earth and woodlands.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I might have some new leads after half a decade.

I'm going to have to go with neither of those. Though admittedly I can't make out too many discernible features on the screen-capped first picture. The Monster Quest still has the right kind of shoulder-build. But the legs were definitely reminiscent of a mans. A very tall man, but they were human.

And I'll be honest too, after posting this last night I wasn't able to shake the image of this thing from my mind all night. I hardly slept and it made my work shift today horrible. While a "man's legs, broad shoulders with bat wings, a 'lump' for a head with a glowing red 'eye' all covered in fur" might seem like a comical "monster," the encounters were anything but comical. Terror, panic attacks, the desire to run all accompanied sightings.

Thank you for the help though. I appreciate it.

To be upfront about things, I am not a big believer in demons or anything of that ilk. I did study paganism for sometime, sometimes even in the woods and we never saw anything like you are describing. Or anything much, really.

But I still have a suggestion. If you or anyone you know have any artistic talent, you might consider making a drawing of it as clearly as you can. This would help you to communicate the being with others as language doesn't always do the trick when it concerns communicating something outside our regular experience. Once made, you could go a step forward and tie it in a circle or seal it with wax and then bury it in a container full of salt if you still feel fear of this entity. When it comes to magic, my basic sense is that it's all mind games one way or the other, so why not use it positively to do what you need? Which is to regain some of the control his visage took from you and literally bury him away?

There are some self styled "demonologists" haunting the board who *might* be able to assist you. But I would also pick up a good book on the animals found in your area and look to see if you can find anything that might remotely look like your beast in low light and while frightened. Might a bear standing on his hind legs with arms outstretched in the gloom seem close to what you saw, with perhaps light reflecting off his eyes? Just a thought. You should also contact a cryptozoologist such as Loren Coleman for any area creatures that may be known to be in that area.

All my best!

I'm going to try and clear up a few things I see slowly developing as trends on my thread here:

First, the Demetricus Devil is not connected to any Pagan or polytheistic religion or culture that I know of. My center of study has become religion and mythology since graduating high school. This entity is not present in any religious or mythological area that I am familiar with. The closest might be a Shamanistic being, but the area covered by Shamans is so extensive I don't know where to begin.

The Pagan or Neo-pagan references were simply to add some perspective to what was happening. My friends and I were exploring it during high school because the local churches had all lost their authority in our minds. It was one of, and the most common, alternative religious practice in our area. We all still had then, and do now, too much belief in some kind of an external force to say we were atheists. But no, the Demetricus was not "conjured" or "summoned" magically by some pagan ritual.

Secondly, I know that demons and devils from the medieval and Theosophical texts are representations of archetypes of the human condition. Psychology, sociology and religious superstition go a long way towards explaining away random demons like AIM or BUER.

The 'devil' I attach to the Demetricus' name is not because I think it was some kind of Christian "fallen angel" personification of anti-Christian ways. It attached the honorific 'devil' to it's name when it revealed it to my friend. The term 'devil' means "slanderer or accuser" so I think that such a definition might be more of what it intended than the "horns and a spiked tail" caricature.

----------

Hopefully that helps clarify a few misdirections I think might be becoming common on this thread. In response to the commenter who suggested I find an artistic friend who might be able to sketch the beast, I will look into that. I tried a few times back in high school, but I only had limited artistic ability outside of photography. I will see if any of my friends are up to the task.

Concerning cryptozoological leads, I've been pursuing that avenue for a while now. The "fathers" of the cryptozoological field all wrote dozens of books covering thousands of case files; my dad owns bookshelves full of such books. I've tried locating anything reminiscent of my 'devil' but haven't succeeded.

I'll do my best to try and get a sketch of this 'devil' up on here as soon as possible for reference.

* Edit *

Just tried sketching it myself. First time I've tried sketching anything in 3 years and it is awful. I'll definitely try to get someone I know who knows how to use a pencil to do so.
