A Growing Arrogance And Why We Don't Know It All - A Concerning Trend At ATS., page 1

I have started to notice a trend on ATS which I assume is linked to the sites growing popularity and slow integration into the mainstream mindspace.

There is a kind of arrogance on display lately which is increasingly becoming an apparent norm.

As a group of beings, man has achieved some amazing things. The human mind is capable of near limitless magic. Of this I have no doubt.

We are entitled to hold whatever belief system or opinion we chose. If one wishes to ridicule then that is a choice and a path as valid as one who chooses to listen and evaluate.

No-one can force anyone to act in ways which are against their own free-will.

However, the apparent growing tendency to become trapped in one's own mindsets and to bask in the glory of possessing an intelligent mind has seemingly begun to create an untold burden on some.

Threads on ATS pertaining to spirituality, ancient cultures, mythologies and fringe topics such as channelling and spiritual evolution, are being plagued with an arrogance which is quite unbecoming and somewhat disappointing.

As I said, to ridicule others is a valid choice - I cannot judge someone for doing this. It just upsets me to see an increase of such behaviour rather than a decrease.

However I think it is important at this point-in-time for us all to take a step back. Let's really consider our knowledge-base as a collective and take stock.

We do not know everything about everything.

There are certain arenas where ALL we possess is individual opinions - which should always be respected. Yet there are MANY who, almost god-like in their approach, think that they know it all.

Please remember this - WE DO NOT.

Reality exists on MANY differing levels and we should not pretend to know everything about everything.

As I stated in a recent thread:

Some need to SEE things in order to believe them. Some need to FEEL things in order to believe them. Others need neither, for they feel they just KNOW.

Should we not at least attempt to approach debates and discussions with our respect for the unknown and unknowable well and truly in hand.

I feel it is important for the future of ATS that we at least make an honest attempt to accept others and their viewpoints more readily. I love the ATS community and hope that it continues forward in a positive light, as it's this sense of community that is its strong-point.

I hope this thread can be a catalyst for greater acceptance and humility.

Rant Forum

...

I agree though, once you realize that it is ALL solely perception and opinion, no matter how much facts YOU perceive there are, another person is simply wired differently and therefore makes different sense of it all.

Are you trying to tell me that I don't know what I clearly cannot? Just kidding. I have seen what you mean in this regard. It is difficult and there are sometimes when I am just out of my league. I know when to bow out.

Especially the topic of God and the Bible. I do believe in God and the Bible but some people do not and I can accept that. I still like checking into the alternative theories they have to offer and sometimes I stumble upon thing that surprise me, but in the end we are all still looking at the written word of someone, and that someone cannot be verified to be real. It comes down to a faith thing on both sides.

Although the non believing do not see it that way at all at times.

Exactly.

What appears green to me is what you may call red.

And I think it is part of the lesson - to accept others and to understand why and how viewpoints may differ. Certainly helps with personal growth - I find anyway.

Thanks

People who react to the unknown by attacking and ridiculing aren't evil or lesser people than those who don't, it's just their way of dealing.

BUT, I admittedly find it hard to see it increasing. Especially when the world I experience shows the opposite - more people opening up to bigger possibilities and the unknown (baby steps yes, but still).

You are right though, there will always be trolls - on internet forums AND real life haha

Thank you for posting this. There are so many people on ATS who seem to take great pleasure in responding to serious issued in a patronizing manner. It has driven me to distraction on more than one occasion, which is why I have that red WARNING box. I try to be tolerant of the knowitalls, but sometimes it's really hard. I will try to be nicer, if they will. However, it MUST be mutual.

So buttons were pushed resulting in red warning boxes lol

Hell it's happened to all of us mate (though no warning boxes for me yet haha) - but if we try to empathise, understand and accept, then buttons can get un-pushed fairly quickly.

Totally see what you're saying.

I'll be the first to admit that in the past I've been guilty of attacking someone for being completely 'by the books' and note entertaining anything outside of that box.

The thing that I've noticed though, there seems to be a predisposition to react in a black and white manner to different arguments. But i think 9 times out of 10 the truth lies somewhere in the gray area.

Sounds obvious, but I think it's an important point.

Debate is absolutely VITAL and very healthy. You are essentially spot on - if you come here unwilling to learn and grow, then no amount of debate will ever change your perspective.

But again, each group serves its own purpose. It's a rung on the ladder of personal growth.

I think of it this way - human reproduction would be completely pointless if we created perfect copies/versions of ourselves - there would be no species improvement in that scenario and hence zero progression.

exactly, you couldnt have put it better.

Its funny, I've used the black and white example in those kinds of situations more times then i can count. I find some people can barely comprehend when i try and explain that i dont have a dominant perspective on a given issue. Especially in Atheism vs Christianity discussions.

once you understand we are all one you begin to see that all things are connected and the truth is what you have to connect the dots with. once you do this there is no need for arguing because you begin to see how everything is related to make a bigger picture...you can even see this in food chains, hydrologic cycle or water cycle....how everything needs something else in order to survive and we need eachother to learn about eachother and the whole! just think if the sun moon and earth wasnt connected just right we would not be here so that makes us connected to all of them because without them no existance and this goes all the way down to the microscopic scale!

Excellent rant!

The truth is no one knows everything. There are too many out there selling books claiming to know everything that is going on. One can only guess at what the truths are, and the main thing is to keep the quest for knowledge going.

The best part of getting knowledge is the journey itself.

sounds almost exactly like the thread I posted three days ago! However, it just goes to show that (thankfully!) I am not the only one who feels this way! Thanks. The more postings like this, this more people will see the message.
