I posted this in my "Thought Exercise - Why Socialism Fails" Thread, but its soooo choice I think it deserves its own post.

The New American
reports:

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Medicus Firm recently conducted a survey showing that one third of all practicing physicians will stop practicing medicine if President Obama signs the current "healthcare reform" legislation into law. The inclusion of the public option in the legislation will raise that number to approximately 45 percent.

After Obamacare is rammed down the publics throat, despite being widely despised by the public and being forced through using unconstitutional procedures, we will be facing a massive shortage of doctors.

What will the statist tyrants do then?

Put a gun to the doctors heads and force them to work?

Since the only thing socialists know how to do is use government wielded force, I'm willing to bet we see the government putting a gun to doctors heads ordering them back to work in the near future.

When will you learn tyrants?

You can't force people to do your bidding.

Violence does not resolve problems.

Let's look at the acutal survey...shall we?

How do you think the passage of health reform WITHOUT a public option would affect your professional/practice plans, if at all?

No change: 70%
I would try to retire early: 22%
I would try to leave medical practice even if not near retirement age: 8%
I would go back into practicing medicine (if non-clinical or semi-retired now): 1%

So...no...they wouldn't "QUIT"....they would look at early retirement. WHY? Probably because they know they wouldn't be giving bags of money from the insurance companies anymore.

Let's look at the sampling

Our survey was emailed to a random sample of 2,250 physicians from our physician database.
Of the 2,250 emailed, 1,195 responded

They had a 53% response rate...that means 47% of the physicians simply don't care enough about this to respond.

They are based in TEXAS and Atlanta. I wonder what political affiliation those Texan doctors would have?

Also...this is a recruitment firm...so these doctors are most likely the ones in it for the money...not because of patient care. And in this market...if you are a doctor and need a recruitment firm...well...let's just say you shouldn't need a recruitment firm to find a job as a physician today.

Very sensationalized headline...not true...but good for talking points.

Do you realize what would happen if 30% of the doctors left medical service right now?

22% retire and 8% quit?

Do you know what kind of a shortage that would cause?

As for your sample nonsense, statistical sampling has been proven valid time and time again. Pollsters use this method regularly.

Yeah, they made up the survey published by the NEJM.

Its all fake.

Its all lies.

Doctors are going to love working under government tyranny.

Do you realize what would happen if 30% of the doctors left medical service right now?

But it doesn't say that...now does it? It doesn't say "RIGHT NOW"...it says they will "TRY" to reitre "EARLY"....not "EARLY...RIGHT NOW"...just "EARLY".

Looking into early retirement could mean they will plan on retiring in 10 years instead of 20. Or 5 instead of 10. Or 25 instead of 30.

The survey doesn't tell us that though.

Do you even care that only half thought it important enough to respond??? If they didn't care enough to respond...I highly doubt they thinnk this will effect them at all.

What me to run the numbers for you if we assume that the ones that didn't respond just really don't care one way or the other???

30% of those that responded: 356 (I'll even give you the half of doctor)

If we take those that say they will retire early over the entire surveyed population including those that didn't respond.

356/2250: 15.8%...I'll give you 16%.

And still considering at least half or more of these are probably in Texas (which means they are likely republican) and that just because you are a doctor doesn't mean you are intelligent....those numbers aren't bad at all.

Yes it DOES SAY THAT!

What part are you not understanding here?

www.nejmjobs.org...

From the NEJM's jobs site where the study was published.

• 72% of physicians feel that a public option
would have a negative impact on physician
supply, with 45% feeling it will “decline or
worsen dramatically” and 27% predicting
it will “decline or worsen somewhat.”

• 24% of physicians think they will try to retire
early if a public option is implemented.

• 21% of physicians would try to leave
medicine if a public option is implemented,
even if not near retirement age at the time.

---

• 41% of physicians feel that income and
practice revenue will “decline or worsen
dramatically” with a public option.
• 30% feel income will “decline or worsen
somewhat” with a public option.
• 9% feel income will “improve somewhat”
with a public option, and 0.8% feel income
will “improve dramatically” with a public option

---

• 46.3% of primary care physicians (family
medicine and internal medicine) feel that the
passing of health reform will either force
them out of medicine or make them want to
leave medicine.

Maybe now they'll come to Canada so we can get some more doctors here. I don't go to the doctor often, but when i have an emergency and i have to sit hours on the emergency room, i'm always told that there are not enough doctors here because they left for the States.

We sit here for hours too...it has nothing to do with Canada having socialized helath care.

It has to do with Emergency services...things don't work well when they aren't scheduled...and ERs aren't scheduled.

No, I am saying that New American takes massive liberty with what they say.
For instance...I am a computer programmer. I am opposed to eating human flesh and if you asked me, I would say I am opposed to it.

Now, if you were working for the New American, you would work my answer like this:
1) I am a computer programmer..thereby I use computers
2) I am not for eating human flesh. to eat human flesh, I would have to kill someone. babies are someones. chances are I am against murdering babies, fetuses are sort of babies.
3) you asked me a question, a question is a survey
Soo. you could then write a article stating, by your liberal restructuring of the point:
"Survey shows 100% of computer users are anti-abortion"
then just go into what it could mean for those whom are pro choice...

poor example again, but you get the point...they skew any and all information to show a hardline stance...by reading their posts, you would think the entire country and all but like about 1000 people in the US are the furthest libertarian view ever with a big touch of ultra christian tendencys...

Anyhow, I respect your opinions. I simply dont agree with them at all..different side of the fence, but I appreciate how you are trying to give a strong arguement for them to begin with. Refreshing to see people being somewhat logical and rational against opposing opinions.

You bet it has to do with socialized healthcare.

There are a myriad of factors why you have to wait in line for emergency services - and they are ALL due to government involvement in the market.

If government was not involved in the healthcare market you'd be paying next to nothing in medical care costs and not waiting in any line.

How do I know this?

Because I can look at veterinary care and plastic surgery as guidelines to how expensive care would be in a free market.

Check out these cancer care prices for dogs:
www.costhelper.com...

EVERYONE could afford that if they had to. Even someone making McDonalds wages could earn enough to pay back such a small bill.

I actually agree with most of what you said. However, there are a few things you are not taking into account.

The United States has some of the best doctors in the world. And yes, they are paid very well for their services.

But isn't that their right? And shouldn't it be our right to pay top dollar for treatment of our choosing if we have the money?

I am opposed to all of this "everything has to be equal" nonsense when you are talking about healthcare.

Does everyone deserve to have access to doctors and hospitals? Yes.
Does everyone deserve the same level of care? No. Not necessarily.

From cars, to lawyers, to accountants, to products -- you get what you pay for. I can probably name 20 things that people, had they paid more for, would be better off. Food is an excellent example.

I'm not saying lower income families should go to a basement clinic for some procedure by a kid with a kitchen knife, but for the same reason I can choose to drive a corvette and others can't -- or don't -- why shouldn't we have elite doctors? Why shouldn't we have access to the Ferrari of all doctors if we choose and if we can pay for it?

All of this nonsense about "if they were really in it for the patient and not the money..." is crap. So what if they are in it for the money. As long as they're good -- so what. I've had plenty of jobs I hated but was paid well. That was my choice and it should be theirs.
