New Planet Found; May Be Cosmic Rosetta Stone

A newly discovered gas-giant planet with a nearly circular orbit around its parent star is the first Jupiter-like planet outside our solar system—or "exoplanet"—that can be studied in detail, a new study says.

Located about 1,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens, the planet Corot-9b passes in front of its star every 95 days, as viewed from Earth. Each of these "transits" lasts about eight hours.

I hope this is just a little preview of things to come !

I always thought I was born in the wrong centuries but how could I. These discoveries are an absolute rush for me to hear about.
It gets my fantasy pumping.

Any ideas when an Earth sized planet with all the elements needed for life will be discovered ?
And a little bit closer of course.

Im sure an Earth like planet has already been discovered if my memory serves. Ill have a look and see what i can dig up.

I must say this is an exiting find indeed.

I don't expect any "Earth like planets" to be found within our lifetime. HOWEVER, i also don't expect any intelligent life we may make contact with to be FROM an earth like planet.....

Gliese 581, although it's a lot bigger and a bit closer to it's Sun? (Correct me if I'm wrong) This is the best candidate we've seen so far if memory serves.

Good info, a good step seeing as it is widely believed that gas-giants are needed to prevent the inner planets being bobarded by asteroids, are they hoping to find an Earth like planet in this system? Doesn't mention in the article?

With a 97 day orbit, it's pretty close to the star. We can exclude any earth-like planets being in the habitable zone. Still, it's non-elliptical which is interesting.

Personally, I am quite sure we will find Earth-like planets in my lifetime. Indeed, did they recently send up a sattelite specifically for this purpose?

I personally feel it's bound to happen soon. Look at our current exoplanet count. Just 20 years or so ago, we thought our solar system was unique. or at least rare.

But now everywhere they look they find something.
There are some new and improved satellites in orbit. It's an exciting time we live in.

Not sure how you can say that first part, since it wasn't until around 9 years ago that they had even found proof of 1 planet outside our own solar system, now we've found hundreds, not to mention the first ones where huge things, and now where finding things more akin to what we'd call normal sized planets .

I completely reverse your statement and say we WILL find an earth like planet within our lifetime which for me is another (knock on wood) 40-50 years time.

Neat find all the same.
