Hanks is pretty wrong here. Sure, there were a lot of "commoners" who might have said things like that about the Japanese...but that kind of wasn't
why we were at war with them, and all. In fact, it kind of has nothing to do with anything at all. Think what you will about why the Pearl Harbor
bombing occurred...no matter how you slice it, the Japanese did the bombing. Maybe we were supposed to be understanding that they bombed it because
they are different and we are bad??? Why do I have a feeling that he probably love Communism as well?
This ranks right up there with the blatant idiocy of proclaiming that the civil was about slavery. Basically, he shows a severe lack of comprehensive
education on the subject, and thus a poor understanding of the motives involved. Though I kind of think he might have heard about Pearl Harbor.
People like Hanks...its like they never made it past about age eight, mentally. Im not saying that as an insult; it is merely an observation based on
the simplistic and ill-educated views espoused.
Now, if he was trying to refer to concentration camps for American citizens of Japanese descent and so on, thats another matter. Those were quite
wrong. But he would still be wrong, as it wasn't about "slant-eyed yellow dogs," but about the massive influx of immigration that had occurred and
having no way to differentiate between honest citizens and spies. Kind of like if Mexico had a real military and bombed a major city. Even down to the
point that there were a high number of illegal asian immigrants at that time. Not that there isnt a good number now, for that matter. But thats a
whole other can of worms.
