Greek strike to shut down services Thursday

Greek unions say nationwide strikes will shut down all public services, closing schools, customs and tax offices, halting public transport and grounding flights for 24 hours.

Greeks have been protesting the Socialist government's harsh austerity measures, designed to curb the country's massive debt and pull it out of an unprecedented financial crisis that has hammered the euro. The measures have cut civil servants' salaries, frozen pensions and increased taxes, including on fuel and general sales tax.

Workers are to walk off the job from midnight Wednesday night.

So it looks like a full blown civil disobedience movement will start in Greece, with vital government services likely to be affected. Of course, it is quite clear that the Greeks are not accepting the austerity measures suggested by the Greek government and are thus protesting in all possible way.

The Greek government readily cooked up the account books by paying millions of dollars to international investment banks. But the rot has now affected the Greek system so badly that the government there has to froze pensions,cut salaries of civil servants and raise fuel prices. If the crisis in Greece is not resolved soon, the general strike might transform into a full scale rioting and anarchy like situation.
