New RFID tech tracks you to the tomb

A new product, the RosettaStone (www.personalrosettastone.com), guarantees that RFID will follow you straight to your grave.

The RosettaStone is a palm-size stone tablet representing the deceased. It bears an RFID tag that communicates with mobile phones — directing users to an Internet memorial archive.

That archive might contain photos and recordings of the departed, or notes made by others “left below.’’

The RosettaStone uses the RFID technology, Near Field Communication, or NFC, which is likely to become standard issue on new mobile phones by 2012. (The RFID industry is promoting NFC as a handy way to make contactless payments and other transactions.)

Don’t own an NFC phone? You can always raise a departed one’s data, by punching the URL on the RosettaStone into your handset.

The device works as an heirloom or memento, which you can keep in a leather and felt pouch. (Imagine handing the stones out at a funeral.) You can also have the RosettaStone affixed, or inlaid, on a headstone, according to its manufacturer, Phoenix-based Objecs, LLC.

The RosettaStone is available as a piece of granite, or travertine — the latter looks like it came from a set of runes you would find in a Wiccan store in Salem. Prices start at a little more than $200, and include lifetime access to the online memorial database.

Hmm... what do you all make of this new technology? I mean RFID is not new tech, and I hate the idea of anything RFID since it's just going to usher in a new age of hackers stealing our personal information, but what do you all think about this?

You don't use a cell phone? You don't have to be dependent on one, just buy a prepaid and carry it for emergencies and stuff. In fact, old cells that aren't even activated can still be used to call 911, I suggest you have one with you, it might come in handy one day, I know mine has plenty of times!

I don't know what I'd do without my cell phone... it's my only connection to everyone, other then stupid stuff like facebook which I don't like using. Having a cell, with my contacts backed up is something I absolutely need I really couldn't imagine not having my cell. If I leave it at home I feel naked.

I think this is as inane as it gets with RFID technology. Who knows what other asinine ideas they will brainstorm next.

Yeah, ya know I do have emergency contacts on me and most numbers
memorized, and you are right about even getting a pre-paid or something.
However, I have looked into them and it seems that the minutes are only
good for a period of time. If I were to buy say 30 minutes, if after a specified
amount of time I didn't use the minutes then they all expire. I dunno. I have
a landline and if I am ever out for extensive periods, then I am usually with
my girl or a friend and they all have their hip phones. I have gotten this far
with no desire, not to say I haven't blown a tire or wasn't running late to
work, but perhaps you are right an old one for 911 could be in the glovebox.

Just so you know I believe it's Verizon (I don't work for them nor have I ever) sells pre-paids that allow the minutes to rollover, but I may be wrong. Try searching for a pre-paid phone that has rollover minutes.
