Excellent article

I do believe government, media, and the school system needs to stay out of sex education. That is strictly at the parents discretion and should be dealt with at the appropriate time. Whats next? Sexual orientation education?? Will the school start educating children what their sexual orientation should be?

This wasn't sex-ed, this was a sneak attack. The teacher involved clearly knew she was doing something wrong, otherwise, she wouldn't have instructed the kids not to tell their parents.

A middle aged black female school board trustee was scheduled to give a 'motivational talk' to 6th-8th grade girls, ages 11-14, who were excused from classes to go to the assembly hall. The speaker, Shirley Price, told the school principal to leave the hall, which he did.

Then the woman proceeded with a graphic speech about how to avoid pregnancy by having oral sex. Two girls presented a 'sketch' (skit) with an undisclosed demonstration, at the end of which Price kissed one of the girls on the cheek before the whole assembly.

Before dismissing the students Price told them not to tell their parents about the speech.

But many girls did tell their parents.

Thank God the students had the courage to tell their parents.

but this is being mandated across the board. This is not how I would want my child to learn of sex. I am not totally against sex eduction to kids nor am I against it in schools. But I do feel that parents should be briefed on what material is presented and how it is presented. And if the parents are not satisfied they can opt their child out of the program.

I think you are giving parents too much credit, generally speaking. Parents don't want their children learning about sex in schools for a lot of reasons: religion, it makes them uncomfortable...whatever. Why can't they learn in school and then the parents provide the supplemental education at home? Teachers should teach the facts, parents should teach the morals.

It would be great for a few different reasons if parents could teach their children properly about sex instead of them being taught during school time.

The problem is that most parents themselves are not properly educated about sex and most adults have trouble opening up and being truthful about about sex with anyone, let alone talking with their children about explicit sexual topics.

On top of that, sex is such a complicated issue that it requires so much more than just throwing your kid a condom and saying "Their ya go Johnny, make sure she says yes first".

Most parents can't prioritise enough time to play catch with their kids let alone give them Sex Ed.

It's just will not work.

So I think that it actually needs to be the reverse of what the OP is suggesting.

With all the sexualisation in this world and the damage that is doing to our youth's minds and to their self esteem let alone the social, health and legal problems associated with it, Sex Education needs to have it's own department and specialised teachers within every High School.

It needs to be taken as seriously maths and science.

Edit - to comment on the OP thread title:

Sex Education is helping to ensure a happy and healthy future for our children.

The sexualisation of our society is psychological rape.
