I uploaded this guide to Ammo for your self defence firearms to my ATS media account.... it is in pdf format so you'll need adobe acrobat to view...
Download here
You can simply click on the link or right click and save target as...
this guide should help answer many of your questions about what type of ammo to buy for your rifle, handgun or shotgun

This is a guide to help you select the best ammunition for your defensive firearm. Most of these opinions are based upon the work of Massad Ayoob, Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow, police officers who have extensively studied the issue of firearms, ammunition and stopping power. I refer all interested parties to the excellent series by Ayub ('In the Gravest Extreme,''Stressfire,' 'The Semi-Automatic Pistol in Police Service and Self-Defense', 'Stressfire II: Advanced Combat Shotgun') and the comprehensive book 'Stopping Power' by Marshall and Sanow.

Thanks DB, there's some extremely good information in this! It seems a bit old perhaps but it's still valid.
I think the main points to remember from this are:
1) - get ammo that feeds reliably (not too hot or understrength) no +P.
2) - Be sure to fire 150 rounds or more through your pistol to break it in properly.
3) - Buy domestic ammo.
4) - Use hollowpoint for self defense, preferably Cor bon or HydraShock for most calibers.

He rags on the Tokarev pistol pretty badly calling it a 3rd class weapon. I have to strongly disagree. I've had a Tokarev in 9 mm for years and with some work it's actually a fine shooting weapong that feeds any ammo reliably. A little trick I figured out was to polish the barrel throat where the ammo feeds into the barrel. This helps to keep rounds from sticking as they load. Nothing too drastic ( no sandpaper!!), just some Flitz polish and a rag will do.
I also worked the action while in a vise using lapping compound. It cycles smooth as silk! I also put night sight paint on the sights which I plan on doing to my Ruger .380. I also put a hogue overgrip on it and I would shoot my Tokarev in competition I like it that much even if it is a tad heavy.
Dunno why he call the Ruger 10/22 a lever action rifle but I've probably put 10.000 rounds through several that I have owned. I discoverd that CCI STinger doesn't cycle well (too hot maybe?). I shot a squirell 5 times with Stingers once and he kept running. Not my preferred 22 ammo to say the least. Federal .22 seems to be about the best quality and price. Remington thunderbolt is pretty good as well. I've also tried subsonic and tracer rounds but the often fail and jam (in a 10/22), so avoid any exotic stuff for shooting in the Ruger.
Last bit of advice is to never over-oil your gun. Dirt and grit seem to stick to it very badly so after oiling your gun wipe it down thoroughly, especially the action.

EVERBODY WITH A GUN DOWNLOAD THIS!

Star and flag for you,!
Thanks Daddybare, Semper Fi

Ya know I think he just had a bad experience with a Tokarev...
If you ask my opinion about a desert eagle I'm going to say nice looking but trade it off for something more reliable... that's from my limited experience with a Deagle... I can also grip about how the tiny sights the 10/22 comes standard with .... worse sights ever!... I wear bifocals and I don't see the front bead...

I can tell you all that I recently picked up a cheap box of CCI's for my .44 mag Dan Wesson and I had fliers all over the place! At first I thought I had a sight come lose because rounds just wouldn't hit in the same place twice... (12 inch round)... nowhere near the bullseye...swapped out to my reloads, (The good stuff) and ripped the center out of the bull...

Its all subjective, you learn by doing and figuring out what works for you...
But this list is a good place to start when your just starting out or like I am switching to a new caliber as a carry gun, in my case from a .45 to the 40 SW....

BTW I just learned from cleaning my gun... the Wolf rounds for my 40 are really dirty!

The only gun that shoots wolf ammo well is an Ak 47. Of course you could shoot dirt wads out of it if you really wanted to. As for accuracy of Wolf I can't really say as I haven;t had the chance to shoot it much.
My dad has a chrono that I need to borrow so I can check out the consistency of different ammo. That will probably tell the tale about a lot of different manufacturers and help me decide which one is best.
Yep, the standard sights on a 10/22 are about as bad as they get, that's why every one I've had I put a scope on. My favorite is a 3-9x bushnell. I must've taken 200 squirrels with that.
And the desert eagle, well it does make a pretty good hammer. You have to be a weightlifter to even shoot the damn thing. About the ugliest gun I ever saw was a gold-plated DE - yeeeeeeeUCK!

I have also had a Tokarev for years. Never had a problem feeding any ammo. I also polished the throat/ramp as soon as I got it.

The only thing I dislike about it is the amount of barrel flip that it has, but then if you hold it like a man, it's not a problem!

My favorite defense load is a 12 ga. shotshell filled with lengths of hard steel wire. The ones that hit end on will penetrate most ballistic vests.
The ones that hit sideways make a nice gash, real hard on the eyes, if you are the intended target.

ya know... I've studied a lot of ballistic performance reports
and the 165 grain Remington golden saber seems to outperform the Federal Hydra-Shok... I bought golden sabers for my 40, look like buzz-saws close up...

you can read their tests over at Firearms Tactical Institute

Strange... must be where you live...
Come down here to Albuquerque and I can drive you to any number of stores with handguns out the wazoo... ammo too...

I was just in Los Ranchos Gun & Tackle and they have six of those big glass display cases overflowing with handguns... and that's just to name one of many stores round here

Just so everyone knows the addy is stoppingpower.net

Evan has said repeatedly he has no plans to make another book or update his stopping power charts

I regularly get phone calls and emails about another bullet book-there will not be another-I don't know what else I could say and frankly I'm weary of bullets.

For 11yrs before I wrote my 1st book I had been writing articles and columns refficer survival and gunfight tactics-this is where my primary interest lies and where I feel like I really have something of value to say.

We'll just have to wait until someone else steps up and takes over... anyone got the mythbusters phone number

I shot about 200 hundred rounds of 165 FMJ Winchesters they were dirty too just not as bad as the wolf.
I finally found a source for COR-BON 165 grain JHP, not cheap and almost $30 a box of twenty. once i find a load I like though I'll be ordering a case from These Guys yes they carry Hydra-Shok too ordered a couple boxes of that too... I'll find what my Ruger P94 likes best, kind of fun figuring it out too

Yeah, my protection rounds are the Federal Hydra-shocks. I was thinking more along the lines of a clean and reliable range round. I found some reloads once that a cop friend turned me onto but I cannot recall the name - relatively clean and fed smoothly. Need to see if I can find out what those were...
