There are thousands of earthquakes every year. There is no indication that earthquakes of any intensity are increasing in frequency. The Haiti earthquake was particularly deadly because it hit a very densely populated city with very substandard construction.

not every earthquake, but there has been an unusual number of earthquakes that have large population centers

What is an "unusual" number of earthquakes?

Chile is in an area of very frequent earthquakes. The strongest earthquake ever recorded occurred there in 1960.

Japan has very frequent and strong earthquakes.

Haiti lies on an active fault and the earthquake did not surprise geologists.

If anything is "unusual" it is the human propensity to rebuild in regions that are known to be dangerous.
