Hi folks,
Some new neighbors moved-in a couple houses away from me about a week ago. My wife pointed to a flag the new neighbors erected, a confederate flag. I live in the North West. I'm white, wife is white; NYC native/Italian.
Usually, I'm the guy that says; "To each his own." My wife on the other hand is quite insulted by it, and wants to have it removed.
I said that I have to research what reason they could have to erect it this time and place, with the world going to crap and all. What message may be conveyed these days?
So I did a search on Bing, and clicked on this link;
www.trainweb.org...

Ofcourse, I could just have a chat with my new neighbors, and ask them if they wouldn't mind removing it. Maybe put it further away from the street. Compromise, find a happy medium we all can agree on, before "there-goes-the-neighborhood."

Check out this link and let me hear what all there is in terms of varying viewpoints.
I don't want my wife to make any cookies, or pies, or cakes that as a welcome to the neighborhood kind of thing if I'm going to end-up throwing said welcoming gift in their faces. She will bake for them if I ask her to. Actually, she's the type that will do it anyway, she is a New Yorker after all.

Thank you in advance...

Well there you go, the American Way, get a lawyer and SUE.

Jeez. I was wondering if this thread would get this reaction.

OP, I say talk to the neighbor. I imagine that the most likely reason for it is the secession movement running the countryside.

Of course, you could suggest them putting a State flag above the US flag.

In normal circumstances the US flag goes over the State flag. Of course they could fly the US flag upside down, but the neighbor would get lots of visitors because that is a message of distress.

I have actually seen three flags flying upside down in my town over the past 2 months. The next one I see, I am going to go talk to them and see if they feel the same way a lot of us here feel.

Be tactful and be neighborly, do not get a LAWYER, the lawyer could do nothing except relieve you of money.

Hello,
Thank you for your post.
I agree with you, and just learned something else news to me! About the upside-down configuration.

I read the article and understand fully that the flag does not represent racism, slavery hatred, or white supremacy but rather the south expressing that they wanted nothing to do with the Union. That is fine and I see that aspect, but ask yourself why it was that they did not want to be part of the Union. The north was opposed to slavery while the south was completely for it. So being crossed out of the Union may be what the design of the flag was supposed to represent but the underlining meaning is one of racism, slavery, hatred, and white supremacy.

Take the Swastika for example. It has been around for more than 3,000 years and until used in Nazi Germany has positive meanings. Now because it represented a negative time in history the positive from it has been rinsed away. You can get a tattoo of a Swastike soley for its positive origins but you will be labeled a racists because of its negative history. You will be walking around with a symbol that has a positive and a hateful meaning simotaniously, and much like the confederate flag being flown if you do not support both aspects of the symbology than a different symbol of your beliefs should be displayed.

So back to the flag. He may have it to express not wanting to be part of the Union and nothing what so ever to do with racism, however the south wanted nothing to do with the Union was because of negative reasons. So he may have his reasons for it being up but he is sending a hateful message and that can not be denied.
