well in my mind i think bad parenting is as follows
neglect

physichal abuse

mental abuse

sexual abuse

too much contol in the childs life

lying to the child often

forcing the child to believe what the parent(s) believe especially of the religious kind but not limited to that

that's all that comes to mind currently i'm sure theres many more forms of abuse

I was reading a book on how to train your puppy and the book warned severely against hitting and excessive scolding, saying that it would ruin your dog. Makes them fearful and mistrusting.

They stressed that although the dog may (after the initial confusion etc) respond to your command you will permanently damage the connection/relationship between you and the pet.

A firm (not violent, not shame or humiliation) but a firm redirection back to the task at hand was recommended.

And yet we spank repeatedly, slap, scold and humiliate or children. If it is detrimental to the life and development of a puppy...what do you think it does to children?

Personally I think this is why so many adults in the world are jaded, cynical and some extremely unforgiving, intolerant and even very mean.

They were taught to be that way by their parents.

Check out the natural child materials by Alice Miller www.naturalchild.org... the UK.
Here is a link. I had never thought about this before because like most people my parents were physically violent. I loved them but even as a child I remember not understanding the punishment I got. It was clear my mother was over the edge.
I felt sorry for her and when I got older I learned to understand she was just frustrated and I excused her but the end result is...when people really piss me off - I want to belt them.
Since "belting people" is fairly unacceptable in society, it is by sheer force of will I can control myself from violence.

Now what if I had even slightly less self control?

I would probably wind up in jail...people do all the time...because they lack coping skills other than the lashing out in violence. I guess I'd have to blame my mom from the jail cell and I'll bet you a huge number of people sitting in jail have their own mothers and fathers to blame as well.

Personal responsibility and accountability are important but it is the first simple lessons in life that are imprinted indelibly on our brain which make us react the way we do as adults.
