Detroit family homes sell for just $10

www.telegraph.co.uk
Family homes in Detroit are selling for as little as $10 (£6) in the wake of America's financial meltdown.

The once thriving industrial city has suffered a dramatic decline following the global economic crisis.

According to Tim Prophit, a real estate agent, the crisis has led to a unprecedented portfolio of homes, but they are failing to sell.

He said there were homes on the market for $100 (£61), but an offer of just $10 (£6) would be likely to be accepted.

More than likely, yes.

Like I said in the OP most of these homes are probably being bought up in the masses by the government, or by corporations trying to get some property to build on - or hold on to until "the recession ends" and then re-sell for made profits. But then again, there will more than likely never be a bounce back of the economy, so I really have no idea what is going on with these houses. All I know is that I find it very messed up people are evicted because they can't pay a couple months rent or mortgage and then they see their house for sale for $10... how $hitty would that be?

The reason is because big businesses take whichever route makes them the most money. Just because they aren't around in Detroit any longer doesn't mean they didn't move to a 'better' city or something.

one thing that I do not get is this :

if your house is gone to the bank and then you see it for sale , the price $ 10 .

Well , why not buy it out ?

Surely $ 10 is not that much money ?

The house may be $10 or $100 or whatever, but there is a lot more to buying a house then the price tag. The people who lost their homes didn't lose them because of simple slight income challenges, it was because they were broke. What would be the point of buying a house when you know you couldn't afford to stay there? You would just have to go through hell again and lose the house.

Well , I understand where you are coming from but I still do not get it .

If you are homeless due to repo , well , you will have to pay a rent to a landlord presumably .

My point was that if I was living in Detroit and there are all these real estates being sold for peanuts money , then I would buy a few and sit on it till the times are better for all around .

Having said that , I do not think the current economic model is sustainable and we are in for a huge change in our ways of living and relating to one another .

Still , If anyone can offer me a house for $ 10 in Detroit , I would buy 10 of them without hesitation .

Clearly , Detroit needs to be rebuild and government is not going to do it for us .

So why not rebuild it based on individual investment ?

Of course all of what I say is conjecture because I have never been to Detroit .

I have cousins in LA & NY , perhaps I should ask them to help me buy these properties so I can renovate them and re-sell them or rent them out at affordable prices .

What??!!
what a load of tripe!
Absolute troll comment,
I shouldn't have replied,
but somebody had to write the words
everyone's thinking.

I feel sorry for the people who are losing their homes.... where are they now,
does anyone know what happened to these hapless owners?
Is there a tent city in Detroit or are people dispersing elsewhere?
Interestingly , I was in the servo the other day paying for some petrol ,
and yakking about the lack of availability of rental accommodation locally with the guy behind the counter, and he mentioned a bloke he knew here in Oz who had bought two properties for a song in the u.s. (don't know whereabouts) and put them in the hands of an agent there to manage.
Apparently he was getting billed for services and maintenance by them monthly, but had no rent income coming in.
When he inquired to what was going on, he got deflective answers so he caught a flight over to deal with it in person.
Apparently one place was totally trashed, and the other had no tenant.
When he asked the agent what was going on he said to him " what do you expect? we're in recession you know".
(maybe he was an aussie christian Dr conspire, seeking to profit from others misfortunes. )

At the end of the day, all I can think of is the children, the old people , and the sick.
It must be so traumatic for them.
