This IS big news for Planet Earth. Russia always wanted to win the Great Game for dominating India and the East. Much of the last two centuries have been based on this or preventing it. Interesting times for the English speaking people

With all due respect, you are dramatizing this greatly.

The US is the world's biggest arms exporter, followed by Russia. Emerging powers have plenty of money and once they start to increasingly get power, they start investing in their military. Those considered hostile are not sold weapons to (e.g. China), those considered friendly are. Everyone wants a chunk of the Indian market - as they are generally considered by both Russia and the US as neutral/friendly.

America has been selling billions of military equipment to India, Russia and Israel do so too. Why does it become such a threat when Russia does it? It's all about money.

I don’t think Russia is planning anything, why do people see a conspiracy in everything is beyond me.

The Russian military is really outdated, they have new jets, tanks, rockets and so on….. On paper but don’t have the money to re-arm the entire military, this is a really good way to make money for renewal of old equipment. I think it is just that and nothing else.

I even heard on the news on one of the Russian channels (ORT) where the defense minister of Russia was saying that they have a big problem to update/change military equipment do to budget restrains, after the fall of the USSR they have just continued by upgrading old equipment with new technology and have not mass produced the new equipment which they have designs for.

So I think deals like this will be common because they need the money.

It is something the west needs to keep an eye on though.

New Delhi, March 13 (ANI): India and Russia inked several pacts including civil nuclear cooperation and supply and joint development of military hardware during a hectic daylong visit of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to New Delhi on Friday. The two countries also upgraded their nuclear co-operation with Russia pledging to build up to 16 nuclear reactors for power stations in India.

Russia will build more than 1,000 stealth fighter jets within four decades, including at least 200 for its traditional weapons buyer India. Russia is also expected a joint venture with the state-run Indian company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to manufacture around 200 fifth-generation fighter jets.

Also here is an interesting spin on events.

India embraces Russia arms
On the minds of both parties, analysts said, was a nation not present at the signing. "China will be the ghost in the room," wrote analyst C. Raja Mohan in an opinion piece this week in the Indian Express.

Having a working aircraft carrier -- India's only carrier, the 50-year-old British-built Viraat, rarely leaves port -- should allow India to expand its presence in the Indian Ocean. India has watched China in recent years forge strategic port alliances with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar as part of Beijing's South Asian "string of pearls" strategy.

China doesn't have an aircraft carrier, although U.S. intelligence reports suggest it could within five years. Nor is it expected any time soon to base military craft in the Indian Ocean. But Beijing is heavily outspending India on defense and is keen to safeguard its seaborne oil trade with the Middle East, a lifeline for its hyper-charged economy.
