Countries need money to build infrastructure. It probably costs billions of pounds, to build and host a world cup. Though they do get alot of that back, not sure how much. But you do need to be rich to host one.

Fifa are all about money, just like all fat cats. Money talks, and bribes are lovely for the top, lol.

Countdown 90 days. www.fifa.com...

Is South Africa ready?

Famine : I think there will be enough food to go around for the games.

Poverty : The local government is taking drastic measures to improve the living qualities of the historically deprived population in the region. In fact, I think the locals are more exited about the games than most of us are. Not to mention, the Cup will bring a lot of wealth and business to all the shops in town. Huge economic boost, like the Olympics.

HIV : You gotta be kidding me. I think the players know how to use protection.

Wars: I do not see any regional wars with South Africa, and there really isn't a potential for one. Because South Africa would win against any nearby nations in it's theater.

Also I think the potentials for a population induced civil war or revolt will also be quite low. I bet most South Africans will be caught up in the spirit of the moment and will enjoy the events.

What did Rome do to calm the population? They held the Games. That is exactly what this event is, Circus Maximus. These things historically lower population strife and discontent, and make for a much happier, festive, and celebratory population.

Why hold it anywhere because of the fans.

Your speaking of Africa like its one country when its not its a continent with 53 or 54 countries; yes some countries have big problems while others have not some are actually doing wonderful.

Your post should be why have it in South Africa.

Stop generalizing making it self like all of Africa is the same.

So were you starving while there? Couldn't find any shops? Soccer's not popular in Africa, right? The US, Chine, etc had more of a right to a WC because?

None of the issues will prevent a happy outcome to the games. I think if they manage to handle Rugby, they'll handle soccer just fine.

Give them bread and games

Bread and Games became the solution in Rome between 200 BC and 300 AD when it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep the people happy, happy meaning keeping them from starting the revolution against the system, against their repression and against their exploitation.
