Playing around with Photoshop to see if I could get a face out of the Sphinx. I didn't do it in color, so you have to imagine it painted a kind of
ruddy brown with yellow and blue on the headdress.
I don't think I have the nose quite right, but going from some still existing points of reference, it curiously isn't as wide as you'd think. The
eyes are odd, too. Too large, even though I tried to follow what was left of them. They're not like those of later large Egyptian statues. More
like Phoenician? I wonder if they didn't have alabaster and onyx on them.
Who is it? Well, taking into account some obvious variations and fudging due to the size and the composition of the rock, I would have to say that
it's pretty biometrically close to Khafre. But then Khafre and Khufu were related, so naturally they'd look a little alike. A slightly older and
thicker Khafre, like the one in this bust in Leipzig:
