This thread is for comical UFO reports as told by witnesses or as writen in reports or newspapers.

New York Times July 25th 1952-Story out of Columbus Ohio-Six armed jet planes thundered high over central Ohio last night chasing a mysterious object they never did catch. Thousands on the ground thought they might be watching a flying saucer, but the Air Force decided it was only a weather-research ballon".

If you like force fit debunks, you'll love this great thread Karl 12 did:

USAF "force fit" debunks.

Seems like they were under orders to come up with explanations no matter how ridiculous.

What's even more amazing is that perhaps some of the ridiculous explanations may be correct, but obviously, many of them aren't.

But regarding the example you gave, remember the object Mantell was chasing which resulted ultimately in his death, was most likely a balloon, so yes airplanes DO chase balloons, believe it or not. In that case fact is stranger than fiction.

..meantime...A woman in Chicago standing on her front porch said she saw a flying saucer "with legs" that seemed to be coming down "to slap me in the face".

Yes but....armed planes....at night chasing lighted objects...what does that tell you about the disposition of the Air Force toward weather baloons...that they cant even catch.
