Under the potentially controversial plan still taking shape in the Senate, all legal U.S. workers, including citizens and immigrants, would be issued an ID card with embedded information, such as fingerprints, to tie the card to the worker.

So they say the reason for these ID cards is to handle immigrant workers, yet they want ALL workers to have them, which I assume means anyone who has a job that pays taxes.

As mentioned in the article, this would surely lead to this ID being required and used for many things besides simply verifying legal work status.

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

These must be the dumbest people on the face of the planet. Why not just start imprisoning the people that hire illegal workers. Easier to enforce than this crap. If this passes (which it won't) then I am headed to Canada.

Indeed.

Anything "mandatory" is always circumvented by those with enough money, power, or influence.

Wait a minute, I thought it was meant to be the 'pussy' 'Brits' under the jack boot and the watchful CCTV* eye of the New World Order and Americans would never stand for anything like this and besides, it could never happen in America with its liberty, Constitution and guns.

Whilst I genuinely offer sincere commiserations and truly hope this doesn't come to pass, I also hope this illustrates how these things come about. It's not about any notion that Brits are "spineless", "pussies" and "unarmed" that allowed the government to think they could get away pushing ID cards over here. That these kinds of proposals appear at all are not a reflection of the British people, in much the same way that these proposals in the OP aren't a reflection of the American people (and I'm presuming most Americans wouldn't describe themselves or their friends as spineless, pussies or unarmed - and yet look at this story about proposals for biometric ID cards for American workers).

Neither British people and American people don't really want them and it's doubtful that the people in either place will really have that much of a say as to whether they'll get them - no matter how much of a song and dance we make.

Whilst that may look defeatist, it's more about the reality of corrupt modern governments who have only their own interests at heart. No matter whether any incumbent government was one that they actually voted for, who in America or Britain has really had much say in any government policy over the last decade or so?

*which, incidentally, aren't state run. Whilst there is some in our streets, the overwhelming majority of CCTV in England is owed and operated by private firms and is no different than the CCTV that Americans have in their own stores.

Well here in the US we have "speed cameras" on the highways whose supposed primary purpose is to snap pictures of speeders license plates to send them tickets in the mail. But it is a known published fact that these cameras do not just snap a single or series of pictures, they are actually recording full HD video all the time, and can be accessed remotely (at least the ones in my state).

So this means that, given enough cameras spread about, TPTB can see what time you leave your house, what route you take to work, who is in the car with you, what time you go home, etc.

You may say, oh but this is govt controlled so at least there are some checks and balances...surprise, cameras are owned and operated by a PRIVATE company, that supplies the cameras in exchange for a cut of the ticket profits. So they perform video surveillance for the govt in exchange for money...sound shady enough so far? If they will do that, do you doubt for a second that they wouldn't monitor certain individuals in exchange for a healthy fee from a govt or even other private agency? Or even their family and friends? Remember, private company...zero accountability and zero oversight.

Sorry for the rant

If they were the slightest bit concerned about immigrant workers, they would have closed the border. It's time they got called on what they do. The American people are watching.
IMHO, the Senate is too fond of selling us out. Someone should point out to them that if Obama promises them a cushy job, one they could get anyway on merit, for betraying their constituents, that is something that will turn the rest of their lives, let alone careers, negative.

You've misunderstood some of us, Merriman. Many of us (Americans) who were so quick to post articles about the abandonment of privacy rights and construction of a complete Big Brother state in the UK were doing so not to mock the UK, but because we were scared crapless that it would find its way to the US next. We never said "Ha ha, look at the wimpy Brits." We did say "Holy Hell, America WAKE UP! We cannot allow this to happen in America and must stop it now."

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like enough Americans are willing to stand up, address their testicles, and take a stand. Thus, the rest of us who do freely swing our brass set will be labeled criminals for our stance against this abortion of our right to privacy.
