It's all politics. Every President is expected to reveal some grand plan for the exploration of space. And the white-collar welfare folks like overpaid engineers and scientists get a few dollars thrown their way to keep them off the streets and from selling their skills to the Chinese.

Then the budget rolls around, and stuff gets cut, and nothing much happens except a lot of planning for things that are never going to happen.

It's just the same old song and dance.

I don't see anything ambitious about abandoning the moon for china and russia to explore. Something must be up there.

Eh, hopefully we'll get back to the good ol' space exploration of yesteryear, but as noted above, this is all politics. I'll try not to get my hopes too high.

I suspect we may bypass the moon and go direct to Mars and or Asteroids.

The Vasimir engine could enable us to build an actual interplanetary spacecraft were we could reach the farthest areas of the Solar system with a Human crew (Think Submarine in space). That engine is scheduled for test on the ISS in the near future.

He could also announce development of a space elevator or EMF rail to launch cargo into space.

Any of those would justify the cancellation of the moon. Short of that he is a failure to the American space program.

Why not give NASA a couple of trillion $ ?
Build a shipyard on the moon, construct large vessels from lunar Titanium.
Have a monopoly on all solar transport for the next 100yrs.
Every nation requires a task to raise its technical and economic aspirations.
The nation that owns the moon will own most of the future solar mining industries.
The requirement that will push nations into space will probably begin with the need for rare Earth elements, vital to the worlds electronics industry.
The nations of the world would do well co-operating in such a venture rather than spending vast amounts of money on weapon systems to fight for the dwindling supplies on Earth.

I just hope NASA get's budgeted to have decent camera lenses.

Not at all. He only wants to get rid of the Constellation program while giving NASA a slightly increased budget.

I wonder if Obama will anounce that he directs the military to release their anti-gravity TR-3B to NASA, to move forward in space exploration technology? He said he wants NASA back into R&D of 'advanced' technology. The TR-3B could move NASA into the 21st century.
