What is a Democracy?

From the Greek, it means "rule of the people".

In modern days, the basic tenet of a democracy is that the people vote on laws that they are to be governed by.

There are several forms of democracy.

Direct-where all people of the country decide on the laws.

Representative-where the people elect their representatives to decide on the laws.

Now what I have been seeing a lot of is our representatives, the MSM, and the people of the US keep saying we are a democracy. This is not true. The true form that the United States of America has is called a "Representative Constitutional Republic".

Representative Constitutional Republic

Well, we can all agree what the Representative means, but what is the Constitutional Republic mean?

Constitutional Republic-Constitutional Republic Wikipedia

A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are elected as representatives of the people, and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens.

Now, Wiki is kind of right here. They bring into it though the Representative. This is not a part of a Constitutional Republic though. We could form a government where there was no representatives and still be a Constitutional Republic. But they are close.

Now Wiki goes onto say several different things including this-

In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power.

We could all go onto say that a Constitutional Republic could be divided up into a different format and still be considered such. We all know Wiki is adjusted so to speak.

Here is my view on what a Constitutional Republic means to me. I have pondered on it quite a lot and probably be paraphrasing people of the past.

The most important component of a CR is the Constitution. It specifically lays out EXACTLY what is allowed by the government. This compenent of a CR is for the protection of the people from the government, but is also a protection from the majority. That is the one MAJOR problem with Democracies. If the majority wants to subjugate the minority, they can.

Now the US Constitution is required to have states that are based upon the Republic format. It is directly stated within the Constitution. Now, this is one thing a lot of us forget is that the states may be required to have a Republic Format, but are not in anyway shape or form required to follow the tenet of the Federal Government. They are allowed to follow their own Constitution and their own social contracts with the people, as long as their Constitution does not infringe upon the tenets of the US Constitution.

Now here is the Conspiracy.

We have heard we must keep the world safe for Democracy. It gets pounded on us everywhere we turn. Yes, a RCR is a form of Democracy. But, pure Democracy is as bad as any other form of government if a Constitution is not installed to provide protection.

When I hear someone say the US is a Democracy it is like someone is running their nails down a chalkboard. When I hear the Will of the People it is the same thing.

What is with this Will of the People thingy? If the WOTP decides to have slaves, is that all right? If the WOTP says we should go bomb some foreign government, should we?

Or in today's discussion, if the WOTP decide to force the minority or even the majority to pay for something they do not want, should we?

We are going down the wrong road people. We are going back in history instead of forward. Do you not see the direction that we are on has brought us to this mess? The Fall of the Republic is at hand. Not the fall of the Democracy, the Republic.

Yes, the 16th Amendment was bad, yes the Federal Reserve was bad. Yes, several socialist attempts have shown us the folly of going backward, instead of forward. Yes, we have Mega Corps running rough shod over us. Yes we have corrupt representatives not FOLLOWING THE CONSTITUTION. Yes we have the One World Government maneuver happening.

ALL IN THE NAME OF DEMOCRACY!

I give you the Democracy Conspiracy.

Thanks for addressing this subject EIN. I too am completely sick of how many Gov't officials and MSM talking heads keep saying that the US is a democracy. Many people who seem well informed blow my mind when they say the same thing. 50 stars and a flag for you my friend. Keep sticking them with the truth!

Thanks ATA. I just keep hearing how we are a democracy and how the will of the people wants something so our leaders should just do anything they say to do.

That is why we are where we are.

Thanks again.

To add more wealth to this thread.

Check these few links.
Democracy vs. Republic
Some people think America "adopted" a Democracy:
Why did America adopt a Democracy?
And a few more.

Seems like they tell us its a Democracy to give us the impression of People's choice.

Hmm...

Outstanding thread!

Talking to the many people I do throughout my jobs, working two, to three, to four jobs, and now sixteen years in the Food Service/Service Industry, and having short conversations with those many billions of people, many people do not understand America.

Some people believe, falsely I might add, that America is a Democracy.

It is not, America is a Republic, which is supposed to believe in and practice democracy.

One only has to look to the Pledge of Allegiance to see that truth.

Quote from : Wikipedia : Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance to the United States is an oath of loyalty to the republic of the United States of America, originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892.

The Pledge has been modified four times since then, with the most recent change adding the words "under God" in 1954.

The Pledge is predominantly sworn by children in public schools in response to state laws requiring the Pledge to be offered.

Congressional sessions open with the swearing of the Pledge, as do government meetings at local levels, meetings held by the Royal Rangers, Boy Scouts of America, the Freemasons and their concordant bodies, other organizations, and some sporting events.

The current version of the Pledge of Allegiance reads:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

According to the United States Flag Code, the Pledge "should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

If we are a Republic then why do people so ignorantly believe we are a Democracy?

Is it ignorance and selective hearing/reading or is it a conspiracy?

McDemocracy : Would You Like Fries With Your Freedom, Sir?

Personally, I believe it is a mixture of both, it is politician's selling a lie, through double-speak.

The use of politically ambiguous and innocuous words and high-minded ideals.

Promising the American dream when it is nothing more than a pipe-dream.

Telling us, selling us, and short-selling us this fantasy illusion where we as standard citizens can make it to the halls of Government, and the White House, when it is guaranteed if you're not corrupt already, and bow to the money-machine or re-election machine through lobbyist groups, special interest groups, and partisanship, dreams being sold to us as lies, through Divide and Conquer.

We have zero chance of getting ourselves listened to if the cards are stacked against us.

We can change that however, not by picking up M-16's, C-4, and a noose.

But by actually forming our own non-profits, policy think-tanks, and represent ourselves.

Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, indeed.

Yes, what you state is the truth, but we need to start using all avenues of our powers of grievance, not just the ballot box.

You do know about jury nullification? You do know about taking any and all fines, tickets etc to trial? Do you involve yourself in the city or county or even state sessions where people are asked to participate?

We had a brilliant start, let us try to return to the time of the past.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks SKL, I really miss the variety shows of yesteryear, where they were not all vitriol and distraction.

Thanks for the Red Skelton clip, it was great.

i couldnt agree with you more. The majority of the people may think the govt is broken but as long as their lives are not disrupted they will continue to be ostriches with their head in the sand. and i am very active with our local(city)govt. but sad to say not with state or federal. We need a wake up call....what that is i dont know?

The real conspiracy is unfortunately one in which we are all complicit.

The established government of this Republic, a theoretical representative one, is hardly that. Domestic policy reflects very little what the majority represented by it desires. Aside from that, foreign policy, and monies spent therewith from public income taxes, we have no control over whatsoever.

Who is more represented by our elected leaders are corporations and foreign interests, and also the will of the representatives themselves.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, but there is no absolute power, it is simply conglomerate - with the power resting in the representative government much more than with the people it represents.

Whose fault is that? Well, it's ours. We the people, at any time, have the right to assert our collective will and re-usurp the power from our government. It says that somewhere in the constitution. I am of the belief that at this point the task could be accomplished with much less than all out revolution, but unfortunately, we the people are not so willful that we could do what little would be necessary to correct the problems that we have.

We the people, are too busy working and worrying about things that are really inconsequential compared to assuring that our privileges to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are protected. Our time and our brainpower is, for the most part, consumed by the illusion of said privileges, in the form of entertainment, comfort, fashion, personal gain... success in all its definitions.

Very little thought, and much less effort, is ever spent by the average American on ensuring that our way of life continues to endure. We have given up being vigilant in the name of the very freedom that we now take for granted. By the time the freedom we enjoy is gone, and only all out revolution could ever regain it, it will be much, much too late. Physical revolution would probably be a suicide mission even now.

There is no conspiracy in the government. There are many involved, but that is the only part of the definition that applies here. What is happening right now is completely transparent, and very simple, really. It is right in front of us. We all are aware of it - we are not stupid. But we are lazy. We would rather let someone else take care of it.

Recognizing the fact that we are all aware of what needs to happen in order to correct the malfunction, we now require organization to coordinate the efforts of the individuals, leadership to inspire the will, and the resolve of most every one of us to see it through.

Oh, and someone's going to have to distract the Illuminati first.

Distraction, hmmm, they are like flies to the fly zapper when it comes to money and corruption.

Maybe a big illuminati zapper, lined with gold and politicians?

ZZZZtt

Seriously though, the internet is enlightening many. We need to use the older venues of information distribution also, just to spread info.

What does it take to actually create a cable channel? All someone would need is a studio and some basic cameras. It is not that hard.

The hard part would be the FCC though. We all know the information barrier that little thing brings up.

Thanks for the comment.

S&F

...I've been asking for that explanation/description for YEARS here. Well done!

But, but I still want to call this a form of democracy. My thinking (fear) is that full out denial simply paves the way for -and justifies- corporatocracy.

From the "American Way" thread, your comments:

our government has become a corporate fascist state with the Banks and the Mega Corps controlling the government.

That is why people rail against it. Now what is the solution? To go to another form of control? Where the government controls all the means of business?

Or do we go back to what works and what gives the individual the most power?

Any large government ends in tyranny, so the least government has to be the solution.

My question:

Given that international trade law has been used to legally establish and entrench corporate power and global corporatocracy - how can it be dismantled to "least government"?

That is a very good question. The international mega corporations use the monetary systems among other things, as their choices when deciding where they are going to set up their sales and their manufacture.

Set up the plants in a de regulated country with low wage labor. They sell in the countries where there is demand and an monetary adjustment in their favor. Than over time the country that has the plants begin to regulate and wages go up and the opposite in the other country, hence a flip flop occurs.

I feel that to create a stable global economy, these type of corporate entities cannot continue. They cannot continue to move from one country to the next devastating economies as they go.

Complete free trade is a problem. We have seen the problem of one countries corporations and governments move into a country and takeover businesses and them close them down to stop competition.

I feel that we need to step back and go to sovereign countries again where foreign entities cannot own property in another country. This pattern destroys competition and is a detriment to everyone and every country.

I need to think this through a little and get back to you. Need to do a little research on economic systems and some free thought extrapolation on a cure for the corporate component. I feel the multi-nationals though are definitely one of the main problems.

I suggest starting with NAFTA terms,
UNDERSTANDING THE WTO: BASICS, and TRIPS terms, especially the terms defining information as commodity, and those granting corporations rights to secrecy (while considering the legal right of corporations to negotiate directly with governments).

Just had to stop in before going to bed for the night to say I was surprised to find this discussion! It's always been a big thing for me to point out that we are in fact a Republic (by representation) and not a democracy. I like the idea that the OP throws out but I will have to wait until I am not passing out at the computer to go through all of the links, though the Republic vs. Democracy article spelled it out pretty much how I feel

Good job, S&F!
