There have been some quality threads made here on ATS about this case and there are definitely reasonable and important questions that remain unanswered. Don't want to sound like a pessimist, but I believe the truth of the matter will not come out any time soon and the fate of Maddie will perhaps never be known.

I've read those threads.....hence my posting of this breaking news.

I agree with you.....we will probably never know what happened.

However if there truly was a proper investigation, there are some very disturbing claims & innuendo that need to be investigated very carefully.

Can anyone explain to me why only certain cases are picked up by the msm. This stuff happens daily. What makes this one any different. Or for that matter natalie halloway, elizabeth smart, etc.

Increasing readership & ratings.....

Genuine concern of journalists & staff.....

As for this case.....well, it certainly has a lot of drama & subterfuge & emotion attached to it.

Shall we try not to regurgitate the pages and pages already written here on the issue and just concentrate on this new development?
My reading of this is that it would be a review of the way the case was handled (mainly by the Portuguese police) and perhaps whether any evidence was missed. The emphasis being on alleged sightings. I don't think this is any way a fresh look at the parents possible culpability. If it was, you could be sure this would not be going ahead

I'm glad that this case is being discussed on here as it gives an opportunity to have a sensible debate without all of the normal emotive, pro/anti stuff I have encountered on other forums discussing the case.

There are just so many unanswered questions and whilst I do believe the police mishandled the case in the beginning, in as much that the parents should have been thoroughly questioned and the dogs brought in at a far earlier stage, the lack of co-operation from the british authorities, the parents and their friends, coupled with a huge media frenzy portraying the parents almost as saints, I think made the police's job far more difficult.

However the British media has behaved shamelessly in this case, particularly with recent events, by splashing innocent childrens faces all over the national press, when in fact these so called sightings had already been checked out and dismissed some time ago. One thing I have learned from this case though, is that the parents themselves will seem to stoop to any level to maintain their claim that their daughter is alive and unharmed, (and I'm sorry but I think that would be highly unlikely if this was indeed an abduction by a random stranger) by suing anyone who questions their version of events, even if it means raking up these old sightings and putting innocent children in the media spotlight.

It's not a review this case needs, as that is just going to be used for more ammunition against the portuguese police, it's a re-opening of the case, but of course that would require Kate McCann to drag her butt back to Portugal and answer the 48 questions and for the tapas friends to return for the reconstruction, which is going to be the only hope of finding new and credible information that could solve the case - and that isn't likely to happen any time soon because it's my opinion that can only lead to one outcome and the McCanns don't want that!
