I was born in Zimbabwe and have heard and read interesting about my motherland. This latest one fascinates me:

The Lemba people are easy to distinguish from most other Zimbabweans - they wear skull caps, pray in a language which is a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic, and put the Star of David on their gravestones.

Their oral traditions claim that their ancestors were Jews who fled the Holy Land about 2,500 years ago.

It may sound like another myth of a lost tribe of Israel, but British scientists have carried out DNA tests which confirm their Semitic origin.

Zimbabwe is pretty far down south - and DNA evidence points to seven males, possibly of the Jewish priestly line!

I'd have to do some research on it but I'd say it could be true. I know that the Jews did trade in Africa but I'm not sure how far south. And Jesus preached in Ethiopia.

So like I said a bit more research and I'll get back to you.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of controversy over who the real builders of the ancient Zimbabwe were.
Personally, I don't care whether it was Asian, Black or Jewish (or some lost white tribe that is occasionally mentioned). It always come down to race.

I have no problem imagining a great and advanced Black civilisation dating back thousands of years ... but this tribe of Black Jews definitely proves that there were influences from the Middle East as well as Asia, even before the time of Christ.

I shall do a post on Lesotho and one odd garment worn to this day that some believe indicates an Asian influence.

Oddly enough, I noticed that Post just after I posted mine and also found it coincidental. However, this news article is not new - and in fact seems to fairly well known in certain circles: see the reference to the Ark - a 700 year-old artefact treasured by tribe recently returned).

A wooden object claimed to be a replica of the Biblical Ark of the Covenant has gone on display at a Zimbabwe museum.

The "ngoma lungundu" belongs to the Lemba people - black Africans who claim Jewish ancestry.

They say the vessel was built almost 700 years ago from the remains of the original Ark, which the Bible says was used to store Moses' 10 Commandments

Actually quite funny

But as a personal favor, let's try keep modern Middle East politics out this one post ... if it's related to ancient politics - why that another matter altogether.

By the way, I am assuming everyone here is aware of the Ethiopian Jews.

Hmmm.... it's been a while since I paged through a Bible, but I also thought that sounded odd. Ah well ...

But wasn't there a disciple or famous figure in the bible who was from Sub-Saharan Africa?

I don't think you'll see that in a standard New King James Version Bible. I believe it is either the Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, or J's Witnesses that preach Jesus taught in Ethiopia. I know I heard that somewhere, but I could be mistaken.

I do believe the man existed as a genuine historical figure, just not so sure of him being Son of God etc. Could be wrong - hope He forgives in such a case.

But most of his documented life starts in his 30's. There is speculation he went to China .. so quite possible he also travelled in Africa.

Very interesting thread, I have been doing some research on this recently, was going to put up a thread but see that you already have, hopefully I can add something to it.

I have a friend who was also born and raised in Zimbabwe who now lives in the U.S.

I have not been back there since I was 16 or so, and still had family that farmed, fished etc.
Of course, they have mostly all been forced off the land and are now being productive in other countries.

I would not mind going back next year to see Victoria Falls, but I will do it from the Zambia side to avoid making Mugabe more rich.

I'm still having trouble with `ancient civilizations` using rituals and/or sacrifices of flesh and blood. I don't see the compassion part here with animals. I see outmoded `customs and traditions` basically, no offense.

You mention that they are ancient civilisations using outmoded customs... this kind of explains itself doesnt it? We would assume their traditions would be more primitive than ours: this modern society where we have Food Eating Contests, and what we don't eat we throw away rather than give to a starving person.

That was already done before.

Karl Mauch who had explored the ruins of Greater Zimbabwe had proposed that such great structures cannot be built by the natives. He proposed that the structures were constructed by a white race - more of a Euro-centric theory. The archaeologists of his time supported him, the Government of Rhodesia which was by white supremacist wholeheartedly endorsed Mauch's theories.

But modern archaeologists have now discredited his views/theories.

I've always heard that the ancient "lost Jewish tribe" ended up populating the main island of Japan.

I saw a story about this on the History Channel, NTGEO, Discovery Channel, whatever, 3 or 4 years ago. The guy they featured had been doing research on this for years. I wonder what makes it a "new" finding today?
