Great analogy for the state of things on this planet in relation to human BEings...what makes us think that we are the only "farmers" in the natural universe and in that light, can we possibly take into consideration that we, also are being farmed and harvested by much higher entities...what makes us think that we are the only species on earth (or the universe for that matter) that doesn't have any other predators using and abusing us just as we do to the other species that we consider lower or less than ourselves...Hello.

Fascinating post! Ants arn't the only manipulators though, caterpillars manipulate ants to protect them alot of the time, they rub their vibratory papillae which calls the ants to them (as ants also call eachother through vibration) and the ants feed off of the caterpillars sugary secretion, then when the caterpillar senses a predator it releases an odour which alerts the ants to nearby predators, so in return for food the ants act as bodyguards. I find this very comforting, just goes to show that the creatures of mother nature can get along

I suddenly realized that this place is filled with people who haven't yet taken grade 9 science yet.

I mean, neato and all, but really? This info is as old as moses for cripes sakes...

I'm rather shocked that this is news for anyone here. I really thought ATSers were more broadly educated than is evidenced by this well known and old info. I guess I should expect a thread on ant freeways next and how we analyse them for improving traffic management.

Apart from religion EVERY behaviour found in the human species can be found in the natural world. And we only exclude religion because we currently have no way of observing and measuring it in animals. From alcoholics to detox clinics, from nurseries to beauty salons, from altruism to deception, from mathematical logic to jealousy and spite, from air conditioning engineers to dam builders, from agriculture to warfare, it's all there if you bother to look.

Brilliant and fantastic, although not really surprising because i think we underestimate our fellow earthlings i think its great to find out about creatures and animals such as this. This is why you should have respect for all living things

Amazing subject. But this first pic with the ant sucking up the secretion produced by the other bug, was the most disgusting and repulsive image I've seen.
I really hope nobody pick a bug like that and do something like these ants.
I don't know, probaly someone in some place of the world, may have done this

A very nice video about relationships between animals.

www.wimp.com...

It shows how different animals actualy "domesticate" one another and both parties become better off.

Just one interesting fact from the video would be... Owls who bring a specific snake to their nest are amongst healthiest.
Normaly the owl would eat the snake, but in this case both parties win, because the snake gets to eat all the larvae infesting the owls nest.

A flag from me, this was really cool and interesting.

Just one more piece of evidence that says encephalization has no affect on intelligence.

I'm starting to get a bit worried now..

I'm all for socialising on a web site and all but, this thread doesn't really belong here, does it?

The person who started this thread wasn't a Child were they? Some of the replies to this thread are also of a Childish Nature..

I would've thought that ATS was made up of a Different kind of "Thinker" and Mature People, not of people who start threads on what most people over the age of 12 should already know.

Am I missing something here or am I the one who has the problem and is it me who is out of touch with the rest of the people here on ATS?

I'm confused.. Maybe there are people on ATS who want to learn about the Symbiotic Relationships that exist in the Natural World and maybe I need to quit being so pedantic about such a small thing..

I would've thought just about every person on the planet would know about what Ants do and how they've been compared to the Human Race in the way they interact with each other.

Oh well, I guees it's me who has the problem and should disappear..

I would think it is entirely possible that they were. I have seen a number of posts lately by kids, maybe this is another. Either way, why bother posting on it if you don't like it? If you don't need any information from this thread and having nothing useful to add, you can always go to another thread, there are plenty of them. No reason to derail the thread and insult the op, just don't take part...easy.

As far as the ants go, it is pretty cool and as many people said if you are just learning this stuff there are many othe resources and some links already posted to check out to further your education.

Well, If a Child did post this, then it makes sense.

I did think however, that Children didn't belong here. That's just what I thought.

Well then, if poeple like learning about Ants, then that's also great. I'm more interested in learning more about Alternative News and I thought that was the basis that formed this site..

You can find information about Ants almost everywhere. On the Internet, In the Library, on TV. Heck, maybe even the local Video Shop can find something on Ants.

So, in Future, If I see a thread started about Ants, Caterpillars, Flies, Mosquitos and the like, I'll try not to get my hopes up that the content will be of an "Alternative and Different" nature. I'll just see these types of threads as Educating the Masses about what the Particular insect or animal does, for a living. Not something like Why are the Bee's Disappearing around the Planet. It surely won't be about why the Amazon Poison Dart Frogs are disappearing at an Alarming rate and that some are already Extinct. It definately won't be about how the Mosquito might be able to transmit some sort of AntiVirus to kill off Viruses in some Malarian Riddled Country..

Nope..... I'll just put it down to how Some Ant suck Sugar from an Aphid in a Symbiotic Relationship.

Does anyone here actually know why the Aphid Feeds the Ant?

anybody remember the mad cow disease from a few years ago?

this thread starts as a "warning". But I seriously don't see a possible threat. Because if we wanted to conquer the small ant civilizations, we could just infiltrate them, then inject their "farm cows", and then pollute all the food they produce with preserved samples, modified strains, & weaponized forms of such viruses to ensure total control. Until they can be used as slave workers or anihilated however we please.

Yes, not really surprising really and not that unusual. Cow dung has been used in India for a very long time, it has some amazing properties including being an antiseptic if I remember correctly. Bricks (and fuel i think?) can also be made from it.
