In the Augusta Chronicle 2 March 2010 there was an most excellent editorial regarding the current Chicago anti gun debate, titled
"Leave the law-abiders alone
Taking guns out of solid citizens' hands isn't the answer"

A snippet from this story Read's

"In court papers," said one news report, "lawyers for the city of Chicago pointed out that 402 of the 412 firearm homicides occurred with the use of handguns in 2008.

"'Handguns are used to kill in the United States more than all other weapons, firearms and otherwise, combined,, Chicago Corporation Counsel Mara S. Georges wrote."

So let's ban law-abiding citizens from having them? That will make it better?

That's just silly. As an Associated Press story noted, describing the view of one of the plaintiffs, a former police officer, the only people "hurt by the city's handgun ban are those obeying it."

Precisely!
When questioned about how many of those 402 handguns used to commit murders came from the hands of legal owners they refused to answer... the answer was was already self evident, as the law now forbids private handgun ownership all 402 came from the bad guys who disregard all laws...

I urge you to read the full story here

By contrast I want to point out when I lived up in Wyoming, a state were everyone is a outdoors-men, hunter fisher, law abiding gun owner... things like this don't happen! Wyoming has the lowest crime rate in the country. Bad guys know if they pull their antics there they will be shoot, so they look elsewhere... where the unarmed easy victims live...

Handguns should be banned.

No militia needs them and you can't hunt with them.

The problem with leaving "law-abiding citizens alone" is that with the Homeland Security Act, Patriot Act, terrorist watch list, phone tapping, GPS tracking, street cameras.....etc., most people - in one way or another - no longer fall into the law-abiding citizen role -- even if you don't know it yet.

One of the problems with allowing governments such leeway in determining who is and who is not a potential terrorist is that they keep changing the definition.

Further, looking at what the US government currently views as possible terrorist organizations and/or organized militias -- don't be surprised to find an organization you are a member of also now on the list.

That is why we need to fight to keep our rights for everyone -- and only fight for them to be taken away from someone once they are actually found guilty of a crime that warrants it in a court of law.

Many on this site, and throughout our country, think: Well, I'm not a terrorist so let the government do what they want with them....

That sounds good, but with the credentials of who is and who may be and who could know a terrorist forever changing every day, we are also going to erode our own rights -- yes, the ones that think we are "law-abiding citizens".

Further, keep in mind that as the government is also looking to tighten internet security, and cyber threats, and more closely monitoring blogs, posts, comments, etc. -- are you so sure that you have never written something online that could possibly be construed as a "threat"? Knowing, of course, that the definition of what a "threat" actually is still continues to change.

We are slowly being squeezed from all sides. The fight is no longer law-abiding citizens versus criminals, but rather citizens versus whom the government thinks could potentially be a criminal and/or may simply know one.

The answer to whether or not handguns should be banned lies in the drug war.

Drugs were out of control, people were dying, it was unsafe to have available to the general population.....so we'll make it all illegal.

Now, after trillions of dollars, cartels and drug lords have emerged and proven to be victorious. The amount of deaths -- done to simply protect said illegal activity -- is astounding. Many of whom may or may not have ever even done drugs or ever even wanted to.

Further, we pay for said war on drugs through taxes. Even if you've never been tempted to try drugs, you still pay to go after those that do. Can you imagine the price tag on going door to door to collect handguns and continuing to enforce it?

Meanwhile, back in the war on drugs, everything has gone underground, the CIA uses the market as their own personal bank account, and we have more drugs being transported into the US everyday. It has become a huge business and made the government millions....literally. Do you really think there would be as many massive underground tunnels going from Mexico to the US if drugs were legal?

Gun bans will do nothing but make more criminals more dangerous and more wealthy. Oh, and let's not forget that the government will profit as well....

Further, people will still acquire guns just as they do drugs. However, now that it will illegal the quality of weapons may go down and become more dangerous. With nobody monitoring it, and people unable to "complain" since they would be participating in an illegal activity, there would be checks on quality control whatsoever.

You might want to double check the laws regarding hunting with handguns in the United States. Its perfectly legal in many jurisdictions, even for large game.

As for the 'militia' argument, you also might want to read over the summary of the DC vs Heller decision from the United States Supreme Court in 2008.

1. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. Pp. 2–53.

And there's a little something about a full ban on handguns there, too:

The District’s total ban on handgun possession in the home amounts to a prohibition on an entire class of “arms” that Americans overwhelmingly choose for the lawful purpose of self-defense. Under any of the standards of scrutiny the Court has applied to enumerated constitutional rights, this prohibition—in the place where the importance of the lawful defense of self, family, and property is most acute—would fail constitutional muster.

That's merely from the summary issued by the Court not the full decision, but it gets the point across.

a few things here you need to do really soon before you allow your lack of knowledge overide the lack of common sense...

1. get it right now into your head that people hunt with handguns as well as rifles and shotguns.... I been doing it for nearly 40 years now and i still do it.... so do not hand out that BS line of handguns not being used to hunt.

2. under the law and interpretation we are the militia... now you might not like that one... tough. We are the only thing that is called an "Unorganized" militia.... do some reading on it before you say things like that.

3. i have guns!!! lots of guns and I have lots of handguns, as well as rifles, shotguns, black powder weapons, swords and a lot of weapons you have in all likely hood never even heard of..... and not once.... seriously... not once has one or all of those guns jumped off the table and attacked anyone or killed anyone....... gee !!! wonder if they are all broken, considering you have an apparent perception that guns are evil and that guns kill.....and the clear cut fact that not one has done anything.... so do you think they are broken or something????
