I'd like to hear from the teachers as to their intentions.

Perhaps they wanted to give the students a choice of more "modern" (I hate that word, its not the right one but I can't think of another) and thus more appealing topic?

Regardles....I think what they did, regardless of their intentions, was rather tasteless.

The teacher's could possibly have a first amendment lawsuit. I not a lawyer who covers Constitutional Law, but teachers have free speech rights in the classroom. Students also have certain rights like the right not to be racially harassed. In this situation, the teacher's rights of free speech may be at odds with the students' rights to be free from racial harassment.

This was obviously some sort of joke, but I wonder what the joke was meant to accomplish. A lot of teachers in LA are getting laid off and may get their pay cut. Due to affirmative action, White teachers are more likely to get the axe. This joke may be a form of protest by teachers whose jobs or salaries are threatened.

Can you explain to me how they are classifying it as racial harrassment? I don't understand that.

This is going to get me flamed, but light away.

In history, we talk about the great, heroic, wonderful folks. We also talk about those who weren't so great, so heroic, or so wonderful. Should black history be any different?

Okay, going to don the protective flame retardant gear.

Are you dumb? The teachers weren't being arrested for this. They were being reprimanded, and possibly eventually will be fired.

You don't have the right to say whatever you you want as a teacher, without risking your job. That's not a first amendment issue. Can you call your boss a douche-nozzle without risking your job? Can you flip off a customer without risking your job? NO, because it's an EMPLOYMENT issue, not a first amendment issue.

Teachers get fired for saying dumb things all the time.. but there's a HUGE constitutional difference between getting FIRED and getting ARRESTED.

There is a whole body of first amendment case law concerning teacher's and students. The cases did not involve teachers or students being arrested, but involved teachers and students being censored by administrators.

You are right in that the teacher's first amendment rights are not uncurbed. They are not allowed to say things that can be potentially harmful or disruptive, like saying Dennis Rodman is a hero.

Nevertheless, the Teacher's have a case. They would most likely lose, but there is some hack lawyer out there that would take it.

I for one would not necessarily call it racial harassment. These kids were too young to know they were getting insulted.

I could see the argument being made that the teachers were insulting Black heritage by picking these three "heroes." This insult, in turn would make the school an uncomfortable place for Black kids to study. If the Black kids are uncomfortable, they are being harassed.

It's LA public school. The teacher's do not sleep through college....they had to be awake at least part of the time so they could smoke weed.

As far as your reality show remark, LA public school teachers do not watch reality TV shows, they star in them.

That's a good counter argument that makes sense to me, but it is not politically correct. Don't you know there are no Black villains....only white ones.
