Greece should sell some of its uninhabited islands to raise cash to avoid bankruptcy, two German parliamentarians from Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition suggested on Thursday.

"The Greek state must sell stakes in companies and also assets such as, for example, unpopulated islands," Frank Schäffler, a member of parliament for the pro-business Free Democrats, told the Bild daily.

Marco Wanderwitz, an MP for Merkel's own conservative Christian Democrats, said Athens should provide collateral for any money it receives from the European Union to help it out of its debt crisis.

"In this case, certain Greek islands also come into question," added Wanderwitz.

"We give you cash, you give us Corfu," the Bild commented.

Greece has around 6,000 islands off its coast, of which only 227 are inhabited, according to the country's National Tourism Office website.

The cash-strapped country Wednesday launched a fresh round of draconian austerity measures in a bid to rein in a ballooning budget deficit that is more than four times above EU limits.

The Socialist government increased sales, tobacco and alcohol taxes and cut public sector holiday allowances to save €4.8 billion ($6.5 billion), equal to about two percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Pensions in the public and private sector were also frozen.

Merkel is set to hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Friday to discuss the situation in Greece.

Well it would definitly be a great way to raise money for your government. Sell some of your islands to millionaires instead of screwing with your people.

I am german, and there is something utterly ridicolous in the discussion that emerged after greece´s problems. Germany, France an the Uk are supposedly the the wealthy nations in the EU.

Well, the point is that Germany is almost broke as well. A lot of the smaller towns are allready unable to finance themselves plus some states are really struggling as well.

We as a country still have not managed to go through one fiscal year without getting further into debt. The party in charge allways talks about the need to cut back new debt to zero, but none of them have achieved that yet.

The population is getting older, and the people who are supposed to pay for those retired are getting fewer.

In 2010 and 2009 we had over 80 bilion Euros in new debt, which in return raises the amount of interest we have to pay which in return further reduces the money available for education, health care r&d etc.

I am really, really curious where we all will be in 10 years, heck lets say 5. If we (Germany) are supposed to be the rich ones, we are kneedeep in trouble.

In short: We do not have the money to get rid of our own problems, i do not see how we could help out other countries financially.

The whole global economy seems to have developed into a single great bubble. If greece gos bankrupt and maybe spain or ireland follow, well then we are in for a rough ride. Germany itself is not far away from financial breakdown either. it is just a matter of time.

I´m sorry for rude/shorthand post my neighbor. I didn't want to attack people but government(s) and their puppet masters. Once again my apologies. In fact all Euroland is in trouble and everybody know it - just politicians and market "experts" are full of false (or calculated) hope.

And this is what happens when different cultures are tried to be united with one another. The EU was a joke and bound to fail from the start. Germanic Europe is incompatible with Romance, Slav or Celtic Europe. They have different ways of doing things. The Nordics are workaholics while the Latins prefer to take things slow and enjoy life.

Oh well, if I were a Southern European I'd let the northerners work their butts off and collect welfare off of them.
