USA Gun Owners Buy 14 Million Plus Guns In 2009 – More Than 21 of the Worlds Standing Armies Combined

Washington, DC --(AmmoLand.com)- Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for the year reported 14,033,824 NICS Checks for the year of 2009, a 10 percent increase in gun purchases from the 12,709,023 reported in 2008.

So far that is roughly 14,000,000+ guns bought last year.
The total is probably more as many NICS background checks cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time by individuals. To put it in perspective that is more guns than the combined active armies of the top 21 countries in the world.

Heh-Guns purchased in one year of the states outweigh 21 different countries standing ARMY's combined numbers.

Still think we are "helpless"? Haha. Americans are armed to the teeth, and then some.

Sounds like one thing not hurting with this destroyed economy is gun and ammo sales. lol. Maybe we all need to begin looking into getting arms sales licences?

Wonder if this trend will continue through 2010?

My younger sister even bought a gun last year. I heard she shot a bullseye while target shooting. Her husband said if he came home late at night from a business trip, he would just rent a hotel rather than risk waking her up and surprising her.

Obama is helping gun and ammo sales. Many are afraid guns and/or ammo are in jeopardy of being banned or restricted. There's nothing like fear to spur sales up. Hopefully our government will be fearful if they ever turn on the American public and try to take away our constitutional rights.

Love hearing stories like this. This definitely helps us to not get attacked on our soil. Doesn't hurt that it probably scares our politicians sh*tless either.

It must be considered that not all of the 14 million are new guns being sold. NISC is contacted for sales through gun shows, pawn shops and other used guns purchase points when the seller is a licensed gun dealer.

Private (person to person) sales are also up. There is usually no record of these sales. So not only are there a lot of gun selling going on, the real statistic to be learned is that there are more gun owners than before as quite a few purchases are to first time owners. I would not say there are 14 million new gun holders, but people are loading up.

It is often said the buying frenzy is based on the fear that guns will be outlawed. Some will say it is for protection and others are for survival. I think instinct is telling people that they are going to have to live off the land and that most are looking to hunt. And of course defend themselves from those that will hunt them.

Survival situation was the influence to my purchase last year. The particular gun was due to in field reliability more than the aesthetics.

Actually, I was thinking of setting up a small machine shop to make specialized rifles.

Thought it would be the PERFECT business venture right now.

The whole no one can invade america really doesn't apply in this day and age. Politicians on the other hand....

Anyway, that's alot of guns. I find it a bit sad that a no doubt large portion of those are because some people believe obama is a muslim/the anti-christ/a marxist and whatever else people somehow believe.

Guess if everyone in your street has a gun, it makes sense to own one too ?

Here in Oz, all but the criminals, the armed forces, the police and rural-area folk are prevented from owning firearms, courtesy of the Port Arthur Mossad operation

What's it like in a gun-free society ? Well, it's ok, you know. People are being killed these days with baseball-bats, screwdrivers, axes, lumps of wood, knives, etc.

Of course, more are being killed by doctors, hospitals and Big Pharma than were ever killed by guns --- but our politicians and legislators would prefer we not think about that

Good point. So the actual number of guns changing ownership is higher than 14 million. And state laws differ. For example, in my state, you don't need a license to buy or own a gun, and you don't need a license to 'open carry' a firearm.

This is great news! Now the true intent behind the second ammendment is that it is there to protect our right to protect ourselves from our government. That is why it's there. So in reality the fact that they limit what kind of weaponry we can have is not in the true spirit and meaning of the ammendment. So I propose next we add the right for private individuals to own missles and tanks and the like! Now I know eveyone will think I'm nuts here but just think, there are people who think it's nuts for an average citizen to own a gun! Obviously the record numbers show that the majority of people that do own guns can do so in a responsible and safe manner otherwise we'd have record violence relating to the record guns right? So if you make sure that only law abiding citizens can own tanks, missles, and the like they again should be able to do it in a responsible matter. And then you can also reduce the spending on the military and Obama can quit worrying about his volunteer army here at home! Right? right? Just tell the politicians this! We have it all figured out!

motivation and intent are everything. a baseball bat serves better than a gun in some situations.
people need to be super mad before they start firing at authority. a few episodes of seinfeld and a football game and everyone's happy as a clam.
the media is mightier than the gun.

There is not now, nor has there been since WW2, an army that could invade the continental USA, even if no private citizens had guns. The supply line would be far too long & vulnerable to air & naval attack. Plus, the USA is just too big to bring under effective control.
The only way to do it would be after a really protracted bombing campaign or WMD. In either case, the US military retaliation would be immediate & mutually assured destruction would ensue.
Consider this for a moment however: what if there was another way? A way to get y'all to kill each other... like bankrupt your domestic economy? All those guns would be necessary for such a strategy to work... not that I believe that is happening, but its a possibility, eh?

I too have run that scenario through my mind at least a hundred times. It would be a very effective way of doing things. The problem being is that in the country/rural areas it would bring us together. Cities and population would dwindle fast but once you get out here in the boonies that is when the problem starts. We all kind of have a close relationship and would start hunting and helping one another really quick. We actually get together as neighbors and discuss these things because that is how life is (boring lol). After that who knows what would happen. Invasion would definitely be a bad idea though. Givin you a star for a very intricately laid out plan for our demise.

I have considered this as well as a job opportunity. Just a little tough to justify a forge, drill press and lathe when I am living in a studio apartment. Let alone the cost of purchasing said equipment.

There was a series of books (or one large book) on how to build a whole machine shop from forging your own material. Step one was making the forge and doing sand castings. All it required was owning a drill (drill press preferably) and a few hand tools.

I still kick myself over not buying it when should have. Since I cannot remember the title or where I saw it.

Nah I don't think so. Maybe to some degree but I know my neighbors and for the most part they are good people. I would do all I could to help them if that was the case (which it may be soon!?). As a matter of fact I keep extra weapons, food and medical supplies just in case my neighbors need help. Don't be so quick to judge us as a bunch of self serving goofs!

Nobody is going to attack the USA, there is absolutely no need to do so.

When the economy collapses, followed by a complete breakdown of law and order, all those guns are going to start being used.

Americans will be killing other Americans.
America's enemies will be pissing themselves laughing.

Nobody is coming to invade America.

Nobody is coming to save you from each other either............

When Americans give up their right to bear arms they will do so willingly. Might take a few generations of indoctrination but soon enough the majority will call for their ban. I can absolutely and utterly guarantee it!! (disregarding hunting purposes etc) It is impossible to do by force and anyone who thinks the government are going to be forcefully removing your guns en mass anytime soon is having a laugh.
